Service by nice staff calling out bon joirno(i think), insalta over arugular with lemon dressing, tart, but not too tart. Swift service, amazing jarred delicacies to fly home with. Pasta Carbonara snob, passed it!

Antipasto combination and sage+pumpkin ravioli were excellent. Super atmosphere and kind, good-humored service. Kid friendly, but small, so it helps if your kids can keep it together in tight quarters.

I recently made a trip to Ventura with my son where we got a bit lost in the day and forgot to eat. As we were leaving Ventura he thought it would be a good idea to visit a restaurant we like on lower State St on the way back home to Santa Maria. When we reached the restaurant it was closed down and several others were closed for the afternoon. Disappointed and hungry we started searching but really had some difficulty. I started driving up State and stumbled across Via Maestra 42. At first I really was not that into the place, it sits next door to a busy post office in an old strip mall and lacks the charm of the wonderfully grand buildings and gardens I go to Santa Barbara to enjoy. Frankly, had I not been really hungry I would never have stopped here. Then I got out of the car and went in. The place is charming, old world and bustles. I really needed the men's room and was told to follow my way through the kitchen. Having served many, many years as a chef I was pleased to get a peek behind the scenes! The kitchen staff was friendly and a young man who was cleaning the floor graciously pointed the way to the restroom. As I made my way round the kitchen I found the cooks taking great care to plate the food in an appealing manner, the kitchen looked clean and everyone was friendly. My son ordered the Eggplant Parmesan and I had the cheese plate and glass of Chianti. All were excellent! The cheese plate was prepared with four classic Italian cheeses, fig preserves and crusty bread. It was a bit pricey for the portion but well presented. The eggplant was delicious but was served without bread or pasta which was not clear on the menu that it was ala carte. We ordered our food at the counter and it was served to us on the small patio. They have done an adequate job of making the patio comfortable but it is a part of a strip center and sits next to a busy parking lot so it does lack atmosphere. The service was okay. Did not get water, never asked if I would like additional wine etc. It was mid afternoon and I think they might be more service oriented during rush times. We went inside to pay the bill and I got myself a Fig Gelato to take with and it was exceptional! This restaurant was fun and definitely on my Santa Barbara list. I can't give it the five stars because the service was a bit off, though friendly, and I would have liked another glass of the wonderful, classic Chianti.
