Azu Restaurant Recycling and Water Responsibility for the Ojai Valley

Mindful of their customers, quality, and the beautiful natural surroundings which make the Ojai Valley so precious to us all, Azu has put in place several initiatives and cooperative programs in order to be a conscious and responsible member of the Ojai community.

It begins with Growing Their Own. Azu has expanded it’s practice of growing their own vegetables, herbs, and fruit, and supplementing with locally raised produce, and meat. they also cultivate the flowers and plants they use for their table and bar decor. Azu General Manager, Elizabeth Haffner says “Eliminating long distance transport of these items keeps money in the community and drastically shrinks our carbon footprint, as well as giving us access to the freshest ingredients.”

This is made possible, in part, by Azu’s in House Compost Program. Azu repurposes all of it’s plant based kitchen waste as well egg shells and fish scraps to make compost for their seasonal vegetable beds and fertilizer for their fruit trees, reclaiming not only energy and time but the water used to raise these foods. Azu Cultivation and Compost program director, Jeremy Haffner says “The water content of vegetable food waste represents 24% of total water used to irrigate crops world wide. In a thirsty state, it just makes sense to maximize how much we get out of our water.” Azu has also installed water filtration systems to be able to clean and reuse their dish washing water for multiple cycles, saving thousands of gallons a year. Customers are being asked to participate in saving Ojai water by purchasing glass bottled water at cost. By not serving tap water or soda with ice in a glass, Azu is saving approximately 1/2 a gallon of water per customer. The the plants at Azu are also being watered with grey water from washing glassware, mop buckets and melted ice

To further mitigate any food waste, Azu has initiated a trade program to reclaim customer meal leftovers as feed for a local heritage breed pig farm, in turn receiving local organic pork for house made charcuterie. Azu also Donates all of it’s used cooking oil to local partners for conversion into bio diesel.

Most recently Azu has begun Up-Cycling their Consumer Packaging, producing craft homeware and restaurant products including  planters, candles, and gift baskets, reusing their wine boxes and cutting and repurposing wine and liquor bottles. Gift baskets are available seasonally from Elizabeth Haffner’s “Hippie Care Package”, through Azu, containing up-cycled goods and organic Azu craft food products.

March 11, 2015 Azu and The Ojai Alisal will be hosted a fundraising event for The Ojai Defense Fund and raised over $300,000 that evening. The Ojai Valley Defense Fund provides financial support to groups undertaking legal action to protect and sustain the environmental quality of the Ojai Valley for the public benefit.

Azu is a current participant in the “1% For Ojai” movement, generating local and tourism dollars for Land Preserve, Park, and Trail conservation, in partnership with The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. Says Chef/Owner Laurel Moore “Ojai is a verdant paradise for my Daughter Elizabeth and our family, and I want it to be the same for my granddaughter Eva, when she takes over our family business.”

AZU WATER POLICY

Due to the California water crisis Golden State Water Company has asked us to cut our usage by 36%.

We’re watering our plants with grey water from our mop buckets, 3 bin glass washing sinks, and have installed more efficient dishwashing equipment which uses 50% less water.

We are now serving beverages in glasses with ice upon request.

Ojai has no outside water source; what we have is all we have until we get more rain.

Chilled Glass Bottled Water is $1.50 (our cost). Azu is not making any profit on selling bottled water.

By serving bottled water from outside our watershed, we are saving 1/2 gallon of Ojai water per person. 1 glass of water = 4 glasses between drinking, washing, ice and dishtowels.

Summerland Cafe in Montecito has instituted the same water policy and is saving up to 1,500 gallons of water per week by having customers buy water at cost and save on washing glassware and using far less ice.

We understand that this is difficult for the customer when complimentary water has been common place for so long. However, we can't stop mopping the floors or throughly cleaning our establishment, this is one of the areas we can conserve.

We appreciate your contribution to saving our Ojai water.

Summer time in Ojai with Local Rosé
It's summer in Ojai and there is no better way to enjoy the warm weather then to partake in some delicious locally grown Rosé wines. Azu new wine list Features three locally grown Rosé wines; The Ojai Alisal second vintage release of their Pink Moment rosé made of mostly Grenache with a touch of Syrah, Topa Mountain Winery first release of their Grenache Rosé and The Ojai Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé.

The Ojai Alisal and Topa Mountain wines are grown in the upper Ojai on neighboring vineyards, but they couldn't be more different accenting the different wine making style of the two wine maker's. The Ojai Alisal is Red fruit and citrus bouquet with flavors of berries and a crisp minerality and done in stainless steel. The Topa Mountain Winery is almost 100% Grenache with a touch of Barbera, half the wine was barrel fermented and half in stainless steel. This gives the rose a softer mouthfeel with smooth minerality with notes off stone fruit and white raspberries. The Ojai Ridge is located on su;fur mountain on your way into Ojai. They grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah only, their Rosé is 100% Cabernet so it has more cherry and dark fruit notes then the other two Ojai Wineries.

Enjoy these wines in a tasting flight to enjoy the different wine making styles and craft put into these local boutique wines.

Menu

Farm Fresh Tapas, Craft Cocktails, Local Wine & Beer

We at Azu believe the best dishes are made from fresh ingredients. We look to the local farmers that we know grow quality organic and natural produce, that help give our menu that special California twist. Our bar menu is filled with craft cocktails with juices squeezed right from Ojai’s citrus orchards where are bartenders hand pick fruit to help make the perfect mimosa, martini’s, and Richies famous Bloody Mary. We love supporting our California wineries, breweries, farmers, and hormone free companies.
We buy locally and organically whenever possible and strive to add a California twist to our Spanish inspired menu. For over 10 years, Owner and Chef Laurel Moore has taken this inspiration and has created a ambiance and menu that has the feel of a mediterranean retreat, authentic destination, and local Ojai escape.

This is our go-to place for dinner when we come to visit Ojai . The atmosphere is great and we love the sampling of flavors and foods. Our favorites are the chili rellenos, the stuffed dates, the arugula and fig salad and the roast chicken - among many other things! The wine list is great and there's always lots of activity at the bar. We enjoy that this restaurant draws a lot of locals as well as visitors. The back room and patio are great spots for a private party - we held a luncheon there about a year ago for 20 people and everyone loved it!

Azu is incredible that it offers so much local and tasty exotic cuisine! The Lamb Kabobs are some favorites, but be sure to check out the extensive Wine Menu. But of course, don't forget the deserts and "made on location" Gelato flavors!! ps. And take home some of the Local Marmalade...yahoo!!!

I have been to many restaurants in Ojai that claim to be craft & seasonal restaurants and by far Azu is at the top of my list. Weather it is the house made marmalades, infused liquors, decadent gelato. I have used Azu to help with a catering and I could not be happier with the timely response, the fair price and the over all taste and presentation. The servers know the menu inside and out, the wine list is unbelievable, small batch wineries and even small batch spirit companies as well as their own hand crafted limoncello. My top dishes are the bison blue burger, the seafood paella and for their brunch anything their chef makes with the preserved lemon hollandaise. I always seem to gravitate to the large comfortable dark wood benches that are in the front window where I can look up at the sun setting on Ojai’s Mountain range but for brunch it is a must to sit in the lovely covered garden patio. I have been a few times and noticed the patio was being used for a private party. I never knew they offered that service and it is one Ojai needs!

Our favourite place to catch a quick tapas and sit at the bar or a full romantic dinner out...always lively, friendly, and delicious! Also, the back room is great for big family occasions or work parties. And so appreciate the commitment to the Ojai community!

Definitely the best restaurant in Ojai (although we have so many!!) for a myriad of reasons. 1. Best bar scene (and GREAT bartenders!) 2. Best Mediterranean cuisine 3. Great vegan/gluten-free options 4. Amazing building with warmth, beautiful gardens in back. 5. I've thrown at least 10 private parties here (in the back room and garden) for my birthday, book signings, and writers' workshops and it is bar none, the best private party place in town. 6. Amazing wine list! With hard to find wines. Also have attended wedding rehearsal dinners and winemaker dinners and they were spectacular.

Azu is my favorite place to go in Ojai. The food and wine are wonderful, with exotic choices and sure-fire hits. It is a great place for both larger parties and intimate dinners, and offers an incredible atmosphere. Summer evenings sitting outside Azu can't be beat. I highly recommend it!

Azu is my first call for business dinner reservations and "take our time" family/friends nights out ! Beginning with the by name greeting at the door the management shows their hospitality and the creative menu always has us egar to begin sampling a variety of flavors and foods. Wait staff is attentive and quick to get drink orders in and returned. Food favorites include Spicy Mussels & Spanish Bacon,Laurel's Roasted Chicken, Seafood Paella and Arugula & Fig Salad - (I could go on!) The wine list is smart and priced nicely. If you’re looking for a private space for a family gather or that all important business presentation look no further. Azu has a great back room and patio that easily holds dozens. I’ve closed two major deals here and consider it a “Lucky Charm”!
