A view into the Archer

In this image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, you can see a patch of the sky in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer, https://goo.gl/QAysWt).

Visible are countless stars and background galaxies. You can see stars of different colors, the color differences are rooted in the type of the star as well as the evolutionary phase the star is in. Cooler stars are reddish, while hotter stars are bluish-white. Read more on the color and evolution of stars here:

Diffraction spikes

In the image you can see stars with very pronounced spikes in the form of a cross. These spikes are called diffraction spikes and are caused by the struts that support Hubble's secondary mirror (https://goo.gl/zFd42g). The light is being diffracted around those support struts, generating the cross-formed spikes. They are only visible around point sources where a lot of light is concentrated in one small spot.
