An 1847 murder in Memphis.

Obscenities Lead to Prison & Death

Sometimes you find the most unexpected stories in old newspapers. Here’s one about Nat Ursery, who had just returned with his compatriot Tennessee Volunteers from the Mexican-American War.

On Tuesday, 15 June 1847, Ursery drove up in a buggy to “Market Square” in Memphis and shouted obscenities.

According to this newspaper article: “Mr. Joseph Aiken, whose family, with other ladies, were on the portico of Mr. Whitsitt’s family residence, immediately adjoining, standing at the door, rebuked him for his obscenity, telling him that there were respectable families within hearing.”

One thing led to another and Ursery pulled out a Bowie knife and stabbed Aiken “through the heart, killing him instantly.” Ursery was arrested and put in jail.

Find and document your ancestors’ stories.
Some stories are more painful to read than others – but they are our stories; by knowing them we can complete the record of our ancestors’ lives.

Humans used to sleep twice each night. Candles weren't cheap, and people several hundred years ago went to bed not too long after sundown and slept until around midnight or 1 in the morning. They awoke, studied, prayed, were intimate with each other, all for about an hour and a half, and then retired for the "second sleep" until morning. That hour and a half in the middle of the night seems to have been one of the most relaxed times of their lives.

While the tortoise may be a slow starter, it will get there in the end. Win a match after getting the first 4 questions wrong.
