Smarter Meeting Scheduling In Google Calendar

In an effort to make scheduling meetings easier, Google is implementing room suggestions and showing guest timezones in Google Calendar on the web.

Room suggestions - When you create meetings, Calendar will suggest rooms based on you and your guest’s previously used rooms. You can continue to search or browse for other rooms.

Guest time zones - The new “Find a time” tab shows the time of the meeting in the time zone of each guest - if they are different.

More scheduling improvements will be coming throughout 2017.

Streamlining Group Chat Creation in Google Hangouts

Last year, Google implemented a change to Hangouts that allows your team to opt-in to a chat, rather than having to invite people one by one. Now Google is improving how you create group chats for projects or teams. You can name your group chats more easily when creating them. Once the group chat has a name, you can create "placeholder" group chats which can be shared with a link.

These improvements will be available in all three Hangouts user interfaces on the web. In Hangouts in Gmail, a "+" button will be next to the contacts list in Hangouts. In hangouts.google.com and in the Chrome extension, you will see a "New conversation" option. By clicking "New group" or "New conversation" you can name the group or start adding members.

Custom URLs Not Available in New Google Sites

Custom URLs make it easier for people to remember and find websites. For example, “google.umich.edu” is a custom URL for http://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/going-google/. Although popular, Google does not allow for custom URLs in the new version of Sites. Additionally, new Google Sites cannot be moved back to the Classic Sites version. The U-M Google team will monitor Google’s progress in this space and let you know if and when Google provides this functionality. If you feel strongly about this feature being missing from the New Sites, we encourage you to provide feedback to Google by selecting Report an Issue from the More Actions (gear icon) drop-down list in Google Sites.

Cite Your Sources With Explore in Google Docs

Hello,

Google has announced they are improving on the Explore feature in Google Docs to allow you to cite sources. With the click of a button in Explore in Docs on the web, you can insert citations from the web as footnotes. You can change the formatting of your citation making it easier to use MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. To cite a source, click Explore in the bottom-right of the screen. Enter search text and press Enter/Return. Then click Select citation format and make a style selection, the default is MLA. Then hover over the search result to cite and click Cite as footnote and a footnote is added to the Doc.
