Why are flip-flops bad for your feet? The lack of arch, heel, and lateral support offered by flip-flops leaves one vulnerable to such things as foot fatigue, plantar fasciitis, and sprained ankles. Furthermore, curling your toes to keep flip-flops from falling off your feet can contribute to bunions or hammer-toes!

The ancient Romans used a “barleycorn” to measure feet when making a sandal. In 1324, King Edward of England signed a royal decree making barleycorns the official unit of measurement for sizing shoes. The ‘barleycorn’ system is still in use today and is the basis for shoe measurement in the United Kingdom and Ireland. A barleycorn is approximately 1/3 of an inch, the equivalent of one shoe size.
