So there I was, standing in the shower, doing what every architect does when they're in the shower ...

When did "Close enough" become "Good enough"?

Few people are aware of where the line exists when budget and desire converge and diverge. Sooner or later, a decision has to be made by the person writing the checks, when they have to decide if they want more, or do they want better … or do they want both?

That's what I am getting at when I say "You can't eat your house and have it too" - it's hard to get both and it's rare that you get to work on a project when time and money aren't the major considerations when making a decision.

Working hard when you don’t have to is a trait that not everyone possesses.

Architects - whether or not it's actually a good thing - actually have this trait in excess.

Conventions aren't always a lot of fun. One way to increase the likelihood that you will actually enjoy yourself, is to get yourself a convention wife.

8 Do's and Don'ts for finding the perfect convention partner.

Preparing CD's for my charity playhouse this weekend was like eating a piece of candy - short and sweet (without the tooth decay). Clarity, Drawing Density, Pen Weight - these are words I want associated with my construction drawings.

Architectural scale figures play a fairly large role in allowing people to imprint scale on to a conceptual design. Of course, this only works when the scale figures you use are the right size.

Story
Introduction
I am a licensed architect in Dallas, happily married to my wife Michelle (frequent collaborator and muse) and we have one daughter - Kate. A majority of the projects I develop are private residences but my firm also specializes in the design of fire stations and retail environments. In 2009, I received the Dallas Chapter American Institute of Architects "Young Architect of the Year" award, but it was probably for volunteering to do things that others wouldn't, shouldn't or couldn't.  For the most part life is good and I am a happy guy. I started my blog on March 4th, 2010 to learn the technology behind social media. I don't really have a list of burning issues or a controversial social agenda to promote, for the most part, I'm just a regular guy (except I put my pants on both legs at once because it's faster that way).-You can email me at:bob@lifeofanarchitect.com(particularly if you have something cool to say or an idea for a topic)
