Embedded in the Fast Ice
Our ship the National Geographic Explorer pushed deep into the “Fast Ice” of Wilhelmina Bay Antarctica. The goal was to lodge the ship into ice thick and stable enough for us to disembark to explore the ice on foot.

Splish Splash -- My Polar Plunge in Antarctica
While most of the country is weathering subzero temperatures while we in Key West are enjoying sunny skies in the mid 60s I thought I would offer a tribute to those in the cold with my recent Polar Plunge into 30.5 degree Antarctic waters.

"Antarctica Wanderings Blog" Parts 3 & 4 – “South Georgia Island” a two part series”

After our visit to the Falkland Islands our next landfall on the way to Antarctica was South Georgia Island easily one of the most incredible places on the planet for its scenery and abundance of unusual wildlife. It is a very remote crescent shaped island located about 1,000 miles south east of Cape Horn (tip of South America). The only way to get here is by boat as there are no landing strips, towns or hotels and it is too far from anywhere to come by helicopter. No large cruise ships allowed here and there is no permanent human population.

So why go here? The answer is: This is “THE PLACE” to go to experience the greatest density of wildlife on the planet along with some breath taking landscapes. Join Linda and I as we explore the magical shores of South Georgia Island in a two part series as we continue our journey to the “Land of Ice”, Antarctica. We hope you enjoy!

Linda's view of South Georgia Island which is easily one of the most incredible places on the planet for its scenery and abundance of unusual wildlife. We had the privilege of landing at Gold Harbour twice on this trip and Linda’s video will give you a sense of the sights and sounds of this amazing and chaotic place.

Linda’s Elephant Seal Encounter
You would never guess that sitting on the beach in the rain when it’s a chilly 37 degrees could be a fun experience. Well sometimes that can happen on the magical beaches of South Georgia Island.
