I've followed Mark's work for some time now and he always has had a wonderful approach to his craft

Kobayashi Maru …

I don't believe in the no-win situation. If I'm faced with something boring, if the odds aren't in my favor, if there is no obvious solution, no pretty light, no awesome subject … then I will change the rules, I will visualize something amazing and I will USE my gear to create it in my camera.

This is (by the way) how you come home with great photos. It's an attitude, a way of thinking that puts the ultimate success or failure (of your images) in your own hands (not in random chance or blind luck). If you want the fantastic then you simply need to be a bit fantastic yourself. Change the rules and challenge the norm. If the light isn't 'good' enough, then create your own. If you think the 'stuff' around you is boring, then design or compose the photo differently (create some rhythm, use balance, make some beautiful light with your flashes).

Great photography (you see) is all about character. It's about what you do before the picture is taken. It's about heart, skill and daring. It's about what you do when things look their worst, when failure is breathing down your neck. It's about doing whatever it takes to save a shipload of people from three Klingon Battle Cruisers. (Sorry, things got away from me).

So what then are you going to do when your test comes? Do you just bow down and deal with the results (keep in mind Klingons don't take prisoners) or do you take a stand, change the rules and make the magic happen. (I hear they give commendations for that kind of thinking).

Celebrating failure IS NEVER an option my friends. If you can't create something amazing in your camera (no matter what camera you have) then you are doing it wrong (it's pretty much that simple). It's not your gear that's inadequate, it's not your pictures that are broken … it's your approach. Get yourself in focus and the rest will follow. Experience breeds skill and skill creates confidence. You can't shortcut the obvious. Photography is still an art and if you want to play … then you're going to have to take a more passionate approach.

About this series: Even though the light today was average and there was nothing 'special' to the scene … I was not going to let that stop me. I simply thought outside of the box, ignored reality and used my $40 flashes and my $125, 50mm lens to change the rules.

You DO NOT need expensive gear my friends … you just need a  daring approach.
