Just reading (actually listening to) John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" for the first time in my life, finally. I was struck by this quote in chapter 5, and how relevant it is to the present situation: "The bank is something more than men, I tell you. It's the monster. Men made it, but they can't control it."
Happy Josiah S. Carberry Day! Don't miss the legendary absent-bodied Professor Carberry's lecture "Considering the Commonalities between Theories of Psychoceramics and Characteristics of Executive Leadership" at Brown University. (Psychoceramics is the study of cracked pots. For more info see http://bit.ly/josiah_carberry)
2011 was the "Year of the Movie" for me. Due to a confluence of several factors (see below), I ended up seeing more movies last year than my top three past movie-viewing years combined. And most of them were GREAT films. Here's my list of all 75 of those films, with a brief note about how I liked each one. Those which I would highly recommend to others are in bold.
The reasons I saw so many movies this year: 1) I joined Netflix for streaming videos; 2) Videomatica (rent-by-mail service) was closing so I wanted to see as many of their films as possible before they closed; 3) I took advantage of two big 50% off sales on all Criterion titles and picked up a ton of them; 4) I gained two housemates who enjoy movies so we have been watching lots of my new Criterion films as well as others; 5) I've been researching a project with a friend to list all the best "soul food movies" (http://soulfoodmovies.blogspot.com) for a gift to a certain institution and I wanted to see some of the ones we were considering; 6) I guess I've had more time on my hands than in previous years.
I like this about Google+: if you click Share on something that someone shared with you and only a few others, you get a message that says "This post was originally shared with a limited audience – remember to be thoughtful about who you share it with." Imagine! A social networking site encouraging people to be thoughtful! That is very nice!
