Video tapes are composed of oxide layer on a polyester binding layer that holds everything together. The oxide layer contains the magnetic particles for recording.  Over time the polyester base can be damaged by uneven winding (causing tracking problems when the tape is played), demagnetization (storing near a magnetic source erasing the tape), and/or Hydrolyse (a chemical reaction causing the layers to become soft, sticky or flaking). Any of these issues can make a tape impossible to transfer once the process has taken place.  The above picture is before and after cleaning of a VHS player that had a tape that has Hydrolysed and flaking had been inserted and played.

Did you know… the first CD made in the United States for commercial release was Bruce Springsteen's 1984 album, "Born in the U.S.A." But… it wasn't the first commercially available CD ever. That title belongs to Billy Joel's "52nd Street," which was released on CD in Japan in 1982. While the first movie released on DVD was “Twister” in 1996. It was also the last movie to be issued on the now obsolete HD-DVD format.

This has good and bad points.  Criminals vs Model Citizen. So what are your thoughts?  Makes us happy to know our phones are that secure but what if your life depended on what was on someones phone?
