I believe to fully appreciate this restaurant and its format (no menu; superb wine list), it is helpful to have had a number of really-good Chinese meals and to be rather familiar with a range of wines that complement them. With those two caveats, if a reader qualifies, then go immediately to this small place and enjoy -- I prefer lunch to dinner, but I'm not sure why.

Terrible experience. I booked a table for tonight. On arrival, the waiting staff had real difficulty to find my booking. After spent 15 to 20 minutes, they (a waiter and a waitress) finally figured out there is a booking under my name for yesterday evening. They claimed it has been cancelled (on yesterday?) and they had called back. But apparently there is no call on my mobile phone. How hard is it to manage booking for a restaurant with about 10 tables? The staff is cold, indifferent, offering no apology, not helpful at all. They were basically saying "I don't care". Terrible experience. Never met such thing anywhere. Since the restaurant is fully booked, we left without dinner. The funny thing is the waitress asked us to sit down while they were finding our booking. Did she plan to ask us leave when the customers with a booking that can be found arrived? So long, Hunan. You may have a reputation for food. But your management is in a mess.

Delicious, great service. I meet with some friends here and it never disappoints. Inventive array of dishes, seabass was excellent, as was the crispy lamb which we re ordered three times. Seamless delivery of food and drink, excellent service. Can't fault it. Extensive wine list as well. Hunan! Hunan! Hunan!

A restaurant that doesn't have a menu!! Instead you get tapas style dishes - essentially one or two bites of each dish that comes out. Don't worry, you are asked how spicy you can take your food, allergies or just general dislikes. Each dish was different and similar to dishes I have a chinese restaurants. I managed to remember most of the dishes the next day and counted 17 varieties. All in all, a wonderful experience!

Best Chinese I have had in my life and therefore went a second time! Better again the second time. Love it.

mr peng's son michael is now in day-to-day charge, and the changeover doesn't seem to have dented the quality of the food. the wine list is incredibly fairly priced and as with everything else here, if there's somsething you don't see that you want - all you need to do is ask for it. i think the few who don't seem to enjoy hunan just aren't being vocal enough about what you want - "ask and you shall receive" is the motto here. the only (valid) critique i can think of is that the cuisine is "monothematic", based only on taiwanese/hunan cooking (think garlic, chili, ginger). for me: just perfect

Just called to make a reservation and realized they would not allow me to eat if I came by myself, minimum is 2 people. I find it ridiculous and so unfair. I really wanted to try it and I can not. I was basically told not to even bother.

Imaginative, skilfully prepared food comes in waves. There isn't a menu, so we didn't know what was coming, but standout dishes included a whole crab in broth, and some superb pork (?) dumplings. I think we had about 15-20 courses in all. The wine list is very good, reasonably priced and particularly strong in German whites (which go very well with the cuisine). I'm no expert in Chinese food but I can't say I've had better. Recommend.
