We’ve received strong support for new language checks on European doctors who want to work in the UK.

Patient safety is our number one priority and patients must be treated by doctors who can speak communicate clearly and effectively. If doctors cannot speak English to a safe standard then we must be able to prevent them from practising in the UK.

We expect to introduce the new checks in June, subject to the legislative process. From then, if a concern is raised during our registration process, doctors from the rest of Europe will need to provide evidence of their English skills or undergo a language assessment.

From the same date, all overseas doctors who demonstrate their English language skills through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will need to achieve a higher overall score of 7.5 - up from the current score of seven.
