Chinese food can be easily made with too much oil, poor ingredients, overcooked in a sem-clean environment, then re-topped with hot lard to coax the Neanderthal gene to resurface. Just the opposite here. You may get luck to be served by the woman who is probably the sweetest person in all of Los Angeles.

After reading myself blue in the face in online pond forums, I decided to drive here from Pasadena to discuss a problem koi pond and find solutions. I wish had done so sooner... Very knowledgable staff with a huge selection of fish, turtles, plants, pond equipment, maintenance supplies, chemicals, and anything you'd need. I was helped by the owner who was highly experienced and helpful about which which plants to get, how deep to put them, when to fertilize, and what to expect. They also have aquaponics solutions which are up and running, a great demonstration area to see it work and how to set it up. This is a family business that's been around for over 4 decades and their care & passion shows. I prefer these kinds of places because they'll take the time & they really care about their customers. It shows. The prices are competitive. I bought several plants & will definitely be back.

I was a repeat customer at Rocks and Runes. My wife shopped there, and I always went there first to buy her jewelry. Two of my wife's friends shop there. Except one, a very knowledgeable friend who said, "I don't trust Wendy at all. I will never shop there." I didn't believe it. I had nothing but good feelings the five times I'd visited and bought several things there. It wasn't my experience at all! Until today. Now I understand that knowledgable friend. I don't have much time for reviews, but this vendor has crossed a serious line and I've posted this here to warn other people. On January 17, 2012 I purchased an alleged solid gold ring with three "white sapphire" gems for $500 plus tax. The owner Wendy told me specifically it was white sapphire, solid white gold and it was worth much much more. "Upwards of $1200," she said, and then went on to gush how everybody wanted a special "someone" to buy that for them--typical sales stuff you'd expect anywhere. When I showed the ring to my wife, this is where our problems began. My wife said it was not heavy, so I had ring assessed through a professional jeweler's certified professional gemologist. The gemologist said all three stones on the ring were cubic zirconia and the ring was gold filled. Professional jeweler stated it was worth less than $100. I was thoroughly embarrassed because I'd given this ring as an anniversary present. So I went back to Wendy specifically, trying to be discreet her in front of other retail clients about what might be considered fraud. I quietly said, "This is not sapphire, they're CZs (cubic zirconias)." She doubted me and whisked it out of my hand, threw it in a cupboard with a note, and said "I'll have my guy check on it." I asked when and then she checked her calendar saying she was away for weeks. "Come back March 5." she said. No apology, just brushed me off. Basically, she didn't believe me. I should've asked for a refund. But I'd give her the benefit of the doubt. I was driving toward the store on March 5 and called. They're closed. Hmmm. So on March 6, I called, asked for a refund. Wendy said she'd return the price minus sales tax. I said the item was not what it was and I'd like a full refund. She said, "I don't have time for this..I've got a million things to do. Don't make this into a drama. You're lucky that I'm giving you anything back at all." I was so upset by this, I said I'm coming to the store. She said, "I'm busy, come at 1:30." I called back to speak to her to give her another chance to offer a full refund. I tried speaking to her, but her assistant let her know it was me calling, and she refused to speak to me. It's unfortunate for her and the employees there. She lost at least four customers, is getting a poor review, a complaint at the BBB and a credit card charge dispute. It's all so unnecessary, if she'd just done what was right in the first place.

If you're looking at the price tags of groceries, then you're missing one of the most enjoyable meals available within the pantheon of Indian restaurants here in LA. The food is peerless, unless you want to fly to the four regions of India that find their way on Bhanu's menu. This is no superlative, but to be fair as I write this, I'm still under the influence of their kitchen's handiwork and I must say, it's hypnotically delicious. I've had the good fortune of sampling Indian dishes since 1990 in greater Los Angeles and in multiple regions in India--to say nothing at my own hands. Against that wide range of experiences, Bhanu's is now my main reason I stay within driving distance of San Gabriel. Go for the food. You will easily forget about groceries. My wife and I had the chicken korma, perfectly light, not greasy, delicately cooked; then the thali, with moist, fresh, soft & crisp naan, mild savory sambar, channa masala, veg masala, light raita, I think dal makhani, and veg samosas. All lovely. One clue after eating here, instead of the often lethargic, gassy, irritated from heavier mixes of food, I felt energized. Seems rare in Indian restaurants these days.. We found the service at Bhanu's more considerate and responsive than 5 star restaurants (whose wait staff are pleasant only to angle for a bigger tip). No miffed attitudes here. In fact, one of the southland gringos was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and attentive. The food came in 10-12 minutes--half the time what you'd expect from a homemade meal. And that's what this is, believe it or no. We always hear the cooking is from "a family recipe.", but where most use that homestyle image as a marketing phrase, Bhanu's is the real thing. (BTW, no other Indian restaurant which I've experienced (except in India) motivated me to express what you, sad reader, may miss if you don't give this place at least a try.)
