Could you use a mini meditation retreat right about now?

Join us for our half-day silent retreat, Oct 14, 9am - 1pm. We alternate periods of sitting and walking meditation, with guidance for those who are new to it all. It's a wonderful opportunity to center yourself and deepen your practice.

Join us 7pm this Thursday night for discussion of the Third Precept: abstaining from sexual misconduct.

Sexual misconduct can be so much more than assault or harassment. Sexual feelings and behavior are deeply rooted in our biology, psychology, and social life. Our subconscious beliefs about sexuality may infiltrate our attitudes and behaviors without our conscious awareness.

Can you think of examples of this?

When you meditate, do you hear different thoughts and opinions in your head?

Neuroscience shows that there's no single "self" in the brain, but instead a conglomeration of multiple "mini-selves," each able to hijack your brain when meditating or not meditating. But studies also show that mindfulness meditation helps us move out of the brain chatter to a "big sky" view of our existence. Read more here:

Listen to and learn Buddhist chanting in Pali. Beautiful chants that calm the mind, ground the body, and center the soul.

Self-improvement - who doesn't want to "improve" themselves? Through diet, exercise, therapy, self-help books - you name it. But can you accept yourself, just as you are, right now? That can seem like a tall order at times.

Tiny Buddha has a great article on how to nourish yourself rather than berate yourself for not yet being who you want to be.

Join us in putting dana into action by spending some time volunteering with us at Loving Food Resources' food pantry. LFR provides resources to people in the community in hospice or with HIV/AIDS.

It's a great bonding experience in the name of a great cause.

It can be had to know how to respond to all the suffering in the world. How do "I" help all of "them"?

Words of wisdom from Jack Kornfield: "There is no I and other, there is just us."

From Jan Willis, in Lion's Roar:

"The thing I’ve learned about hope ... is that it grows from action, not from thought. If we wish to see an enlightened world of peace and justice for all, we have to move beyond merely imagining it, to nonviolent actions, however small, that will help to usher it in."

Great article!
