FROM NOVEMBER 2007: Peanuts Treasury was the first hardcover book I remember getting as a kid, somewhere around 1968, 1969. I spent hours reading and re-reading it, losing myself in the comic misadventures of Charlie Brown and Snoopy, wishing I could be like Charles Schulz, the strip’s writer and artist. My first dog, acquired around that same time, was not coincidentally a beagle, like Snoopy, whom we named Peppy, and I loved that crazy dog. I was so fond of Peanuts Treasury that it’s one of the few prized possessions from my misspent youth that followed me through college, half a dozen adult relocations, and is now on my daughter’s bookshelf.

It’s hard to find anyone who has anything bad to say about “Peanuts” or Schulz. The strip’s creator lived and thrived in the pre-Internet age where the world didn’t demand every detail of a celebrity’s life be preserved and shared. For the most part, we knew only his good works and the enduring cartoon series based on them. In his new book, Schulz and Peanuts, biographer David Michaelis introduces readers to the real cartoonist behind the daily strip. Michaelis’ previous biographical work includes a history of painter N. C. Wyeth.

Happy Birthday to long-time ‘New' X-Men writer Chris Claremont! 2013 VIDEO INTERVIEW

CHRIS CLAREMONT podcast excerpt: “I wanted to get to a point where the X-Men’s Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor would leave the team, raise their children, and live happily ever after in Alaska—having a normal life, with Scott coming back from time to time for exciting adventures. But have him do it from the perspective of, ‘I have a wife and son now. I have a life.’ My paradigm was, you pick up the Uncanny X-Men at issue 100, you see one iteration. You come back for issue 300, you’ll see a different one. You redefine the mix of characters for each reading generation.”

Today's Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman appearance by journalist Robert K. Elder makes his fourth on the show. Why do I keep having him back? Because he always writes such diverse and interesting books. His latest? Hidden Hemingway. Check it -- and this new video interview -- out!

ROBERT K. ELDER podcast excerpt: “The Agnes von Kurowskiy letters sort of broke Hemingway in half… If you read these letters, she is very passionate and loving and talks about spending eternity together. To people who discounted this story, I say, ‘Read the letters!'”

Happy Birthday to Sandra Beckwith, creator of The Do(o)little Report! 1997 INTERVIEW

SANDRA BECKWITH interview excerpt: "Women are earning more money so they're no longer afraid of biting the hand that feeds them. The rent is no longer at stake if he doesn't like what she says. I didn't think the behavior of men is any worse today than 30 years ago -- we're just talking about it more."

Happy Birthday comedian/podcaster Marc Maron! 2010 PODCAST INTERVIEW

MARC MARON podcast excerpt: “The darkest realization I’ve had… I want to go from the second lowest rung on the show business ladder to the lowest one and put a band together, at 47 years old, is ridiculous. I’m relatively infantile in my delusions of what’s next for me.”
