Surgery Time!

I know I haven’t posted any updates for a few weeks, but things have been really busy around here getting ready for the big day. Later this week I’ll finally be going under the knife, and that knife will be in the hands of renowned prostate surgeon Dr. E. David Crawford at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.

It’s Christmas Eve today, and also my 42nd birthday. I thought I’d use this week’s blog post to give everyone a quick update on the status of my cancer journey…there have been some pretty big changes over the last week!

The Hobbit was just released this past week, and so was the news that Sir Ian McKellen – the actor who portrays Gandalf in the movie – has been a prostate cancer survivor for the last 6 or 7 years.

This made me wonder...what other famous men have this disease? I did some digging...here's a list of them that might surprise you!

Can prostate cancer be cured?

A man named Michael Shirley in Australia was able to completely cure his prostate cancer through diet and lifestyle changes ALONE. No surgery or radiation required!

I had my 2nd opinion appointment this past week at the University of Colorado Hospital. The staff there was GREAT! They really treated me well and I walked away feeling like I was getting the best care available.

I’ll tell you more about my visit in a minute, but I thought this might be a good opportunity to talk about why it’s worth driving over to a research hospital for a 2nd opinion (and even for treatment), and not just staying with your local “one-stop-shop” urologist. Most people don’t even think about this…they just stick with the doctor that diagnosed them…but there are some REAL ADVANTAGES to making the trip to the big prostate cancer center near you.

I found this video report while I was doing some research today…it was put together by Mike Landess, a TV news anchor at 7 News in Denver, CO who was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2006. I can really relate to this guy…his approach to the diagnosis was a lot like my own, and he lives in my neck of the woods, too.

Once the shock wore off from my own prostate cancer diagnosis, one of the biggest questions I kept trying to answer was simply “WHY”. I was only 41 years old at the time, and I was in “perfect health” (or so I thought). There was absolutely no reason for this…what could possibly have caused this to happen?

It turns out that there are 3 really big factors that have the most influence on whether you get prostate cancer or not. Usually, it’s due to a combination of more than one of these things.
