The Weekender will do just that, end your week. Physically over-exerting yourself on the weekend while doing a sport or home project or exercise can really cause more damage then good if you are not physically active on a weekend basis. This is more true the older you get as well. Be sure to ease into your activity and do the following:

1. Avoid any extreme or vigorous burst of activity, especially on cold or seldom used muscles. Warm up before you do anything with light exercise or low impact activity. Don't try to do too much.

2. Be mindful of your posture. Squatting or putting yourself in unnatural positions for extended amounts of time can damage your back muscles. Keep good posture and change positions often.

3. Don't strain your muscles for extended amounts of time if you are not use to regular, physical activity. Don't expect your body to be able to withstand hours of physical torture if you spend your weeks behind a computer. Don't be afraid to ask for help on your projects or use bracing or tools to help support you.

4. Be sure to not stretch yourself too thin. If you are trying to exercise or stretch to avoid injury make sure you don't injure yourself doing it. The same rule applies here, ease into it.

Please ease into your weekend projects or activities instead of a jumping in headfirst, especially if you work behind a desk all week and don't routinely exercise. It is very easy for you to cause damage to your back by engaging in a physical activity too strenuous if you don't properly ease into it. We call this The Weekender, and it will do just that, end your week.

Sometimes the weekend activity that can cause you pain is the very activity that you are doing to prevent pain, exercise. Exercise is always a good thing, but just like anything else, you have to slowly work into it. Don’t over extend your muscles with once a week yoga or Zumba or workout sessions in the Mooresville or Statesville, NC areas.

If you want to avoid problems, try to exercise more than just once a week. This way your body doesn’t have a chance to get soft. Also, don’t start out too strong. There is no shame in taking it easy in the beginning.

If you are hurting from exercise and stretching then doing more stretches may not always be a good idea. But there are low-impact stretches out there that can help loosen sore muscles like this one.

Knees To Chest Stretch
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on floor.
Slowly bring your knees forward and grab your legs below the kneecap.
Hold for around 20 seconds and release.
Repeat this stretch several times.

Do you have any Do-It-Yourself weekend projects here in Mooresville or Huntersville or Cornelius, NC this weekend? Weekend projects can require hours of straining. This type of muscle strain isn't something that you normally do during the week so your body isn't use to it. This may damage areas of your back that are not accustomed to such a physical load. Home improvement projects can often be a cause of this.

Before tackling a large project by yourself ask a friend or family member to help. Also, use braces and supports to help shoulder the load.

Upper back pain may result from this behavior of The Weekender. Do this easy stretch to help relieve the tension.

Yoga Cat Stretch

Start by kneeling on all fours.
Exhale deeply and gently add a lower arch dip to your back.
Then inhale while you tighten your core muscles while arching your back upward.
Hold each position for around 5-10 seconds.
Repeat 10 times.
