AAO Login Needed: Almost two decades after Calhoun Vision was founded, a 600-patient pivotal FDA trial is underway in the US for a light adjustable lens (LAL) that allows the surgeon to refract the patient after surgery. http://isrs.aao.org/resources/july-2016 #‎ophthalmology #‎refractivesurgery #IOL

AAO Login Needed: “Flap creation is essential,” says Stephen Slade, MD, FACS, founder of Slade & Baker Vision Center in Houston, Texas, where the first LASIK and the first all laser LASIK in the US were performed. “You shouldn't do LASIK unless you have a good flap. The flap creation is the safety aspect of LASIK, whereas an excimer laser ablation is the efficacy part.” https://isrs.aao.org/resources/december-2016 #LASIK #FemtosecondLaser #ophthalmology #OMDAcademy

AAO Login Needed: “For creating a LASIK flap with a femtosecond laser, the single most important word of advice I have is simply get to know the device,” says Steven Schallhorn, MD, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southern California and the University of California, San Francisco, who oversees approximately 80,000 laser vision correction procedures every year at Optical Express. “Understand the software, know how to put the numbers in yourself, know its calibration and how true it is. Some devices have a smaller footprint on the eye than others, so they may be easier to get suction with.” https://isrs.aao.org/resources/december-2016 #LASIK #FemtosecondLaser #ophthalmology #OMDAcademy

AAO Login Needed: “Currently, the most common way we compensate for residual error after cataract surgery is by performing a secondary laser surgery on the cornea. A more elegant solution would be to treat the lens instead, which is what Calhoun and Perfect Lens are doing with in vivo customization,” said Daniel S. Durrie, MD, clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and founder of Durrie Vision in Overland Park, Kansas. http://isrs.aao.org/resources/august-2016 #ophthalmology #cataracts #cataractsurgery #OMDAcademy

The latest approach to presbyopia correction is aimed at restoring natural accommodation by softening the lens with a femtosecond laser. Two companies, Lensar (Orlando, Fla.) and Rowiak (Hanover, Germany), have ongoing clinical trials investigating the use of their femtosecond lasers to soften the presbyopic crystalline lens. https://isrs.aao.org/resources/april-2016

AAO Login Needed: Guy Kezirian, MD, founder of Refractive Surgery Alliance and the Physician CEO Program at Kellogg Northwestern University, lauded the study. “The satisfaction rates with LASIK were completely expected. But to have that documented in a prospective study is very important,” he said. https://isrs.aao.org/resources/november-2016 #LASIK #contactlenses #ophthalmology #OMDAcademy
