One thing I have never understood about US politicians is their hatred towards immigrants, because they are all immigrants. Unless you are a native American, every single person in the US is tied to immigrants.

Not surprisingly, Donald Trump takes the headlines again, saying:

"Donald Trump would reverse President Obama's executive orders on immigration and deport all undocumented immigrants from the U.S. as president."

_"We're going to keep the families together, but they have to go," he said in the interview, which will air in full on NBC's "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

"Pressed on what he'd do if the immigrants in question had nowhere to return to, Trump reiterated: "They have to go."

"We will work with them. They have to go. Chuck, we either have a country, or we don't have a country,"

The problem is that Donald Trump is a 2nd and 3rd generation immigrant himself. His mother was an immigrant. She was born in Scotland before emigrating to the USA to marry his father, Fred Trump. And both of Fred Trump's parents, and thus Donald Trump's grandparents, were German immigrants.

More to the point, Donald Trump's first wife, Ivana Zelnรญฤkovรก, was born in Czech Republic, which makes her an immigrant as well. And his third wife, ย Melania Knauss, was born in Slovenia, which also makes her an immigrant.ย

And this means that three of Donald's kids are 2nd generation immigrants too.

So, let's look at that quote once again: "We're going to keep the families together, but they have to go. ... We either have a country, or we don't have a country"

You see what's going on here? This has nothing to do with immigration. Instead, it has everything to do with what I call 'xenophobic nationalism', in which Donald and many other US politicians wants to stop only a certain type of people from coming to the US.ย

It's basically racism towards Latin Americans.

Of course, this isn't unique to Donald or the US. We have many of the same problems in Europe in which our politicians too don't have any problems with immigrants coming from countries that 'are like us', but are trying everything they can to discriminate against immigrants from countries that aren't.

Note: In Europe, we have the added problem that a lot of immigrants are actually refugees. It's not people who wanted to come to Europe, but they had to, otherwise they would be killed. Treating them as immigrants is extremely disrespectful.

Again, it's xenophobic nationalism.ย

Xenophobic, meaning A person who is fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or of people from different countries or cultures.

Nationalism, meaning A person who believes that his/her country is superior, due to the traits of a single culture and way of life.

And when you put those two together, you get intolerance towards anyone who are different from them, either in culture, race, color, gender, or religion.

If we look at all the bad things that has happened on this planet, you can link xenophobic nationalism to almost all of them. From the big wars, to ethnic cleansing, to terrorist organizations (who define nationalism as a religion rather as a country), to everyday violence, disrespect and harassment. ย

And our politicians are increasingly getting in on the game as well. Xenophobic nationalism is growing across the US and across Europe.ย

In my country, we recently had an election where most of the political parties competed on who could be the most xenophobic nationalists. And guess what, the worst ones were also the ones who gained the most new votes.

How awful is that?

Xenophobic nationalism is the greatest threat that we face. The reason is that it's because of xenophobic nationalism that we have so many conflicts around the world. It's the disrespect towards others (especially of those others are not like you), and when you start to polarize that (as is also happening), you get violence.

You cannot fight xenophobic nationalism by becoming a xenophobic nationalist yourself just with opposing views. Both are intolerant towards each other, at opposing ends of the spectrum. If you bring those two together, they will rather fight than be friends.

Take my country. Our new Minister of Immigration is herself an extreme xenophobic nationalist, and she absolutely despises anything that is foreign to her, even to the point where she is introducing legislation design to discriminate against people from certain culture.

How do you think that is working? Do you think this solves the problems of immigration, or do you think it builds up more and more hatred and conflicts in our country between different cultures? Do you think this makes our country more tolerant and respectable, or do you think it makes it look intolerant and closed-minded?

Xenophobic nationalism is terrible, because it breeds conflicts rather than solves the problem.๏ปฟ
Donald Trump told NBC's Chuck Todd that he would reverse President Obama's executive actions delaying deportations as president.
