Myths about Child Counseling that You Need to Know

One of the most effective methods of therapy that we have known today is counseling. It does not require much just a listening ear. However, some are still quite apprehensive about the efficacy of the counseling method.

Today, on the blog, we will debunk some of the common myths about child counseling.

Myth 1: Counseling is for the "bad kids"

We never classify kids as either good or bad. Counseling is for everyone. This method of therapy only requires you to share things that are bothering you. While for some, it becomes a requirement because there is an impending issue that needs to be addressed right away. But basically, counseling can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.

Myth 2: Counseling does not cure anything

People do not really believe that talking things out can actually cure problems. During the first few sessions, you do not really see the effects right away. But over time, you will notice differences in your kid. For example, if they were once rebellious and disrespectful to you, subtle changes like talking more softly or following your orders can be evident to them in no time.

To know more about the different misconceptions about counseling, you can talk to the experts in N.E.E.D, INC. For details, you can check our website www.needincfla.org.

Common Issues our Teenagers are Dealing with Today

Teenage years are one of the most crucial stages in a person's life. We all go through our fair share of teenage rebellion at some point in our lives. Perhaps, we have lied to our parents so we can hang out with our friends or perhaps, we have tried doing bad things without them knowing. But at some point, we have overcome such teenage phase because our parents have talked us to our senses. However, some children do not get to experience such luxury.

When these kids do not get much attention from parents, they can go wild and hard to control. We do not wait for this to happen. As one of the advocates for children counseling, N.E.E.D, INC. (Nehemiah Educational and Economic Development, Inc.) has listed down the common issues that are bothering our teens today.

• Battling with Peer Pressure

When we are in our teens, we tend to be closer with our friends than our parents. We trust them more than our mom, and worst we even follow their advice not knowing that it could be bad for us. Peer pressure is a tough battle.

But as parents, if we know how to deal with kids and their behavior, we can get through this stage successfully. The best way to solve this is to understand our kids first before deciding on how to act on it.

• Bullying

Another serious issue among teenagers is bullying. The bully and the victim both suffer the consequences. The victim can be traumatized by the bully. The bully, on the other hand, must be undergoing some serious personal problems and they are projecting it through making fun of another person.

To resolve this, it needs the joint efforts of a counselor and the parent in order to address the issue properly. Ultimately, our kids do not need added stress from us. They need us to listen to them and understand them. Should they need help, we have to give it to them in a good way.

Can you think of other issues among teenagers today? Does your teen experience any of the aforementioned? Let us hear all about it. You can schedule a consultation with us at N.E.E.D, INC. Reasons Why You Need to Do Volunteer Work Every Now and Then

We all pretty much live a busy life. It is so difficult for us to find the time and actually do something we love. It would be even more difficult for us to spare an hour or two in doing charitable works. But little do we know, volunteering in social works and outreach program is beneficial to us.

When we volunteer, we gain a lot of things. It also gives us the opportunity to take a break from our busy lives and be able to see and appreciate all the things we have. We must not hesitate to give back to our community for it will pay us back a hundred fold.

What do you get from volunteer work?

• You can inspire people

Did you ever notice that every time you do something good you feel happy? Maybe this is because you were able to make difference in one person’s life. Through your simple gesture, you made someone happy and it just feels great to hear them say “thank you” for the things that you did for them.

With our outreach programs at N.E.E.D, INC. (Nehemiah Educational and Economic Development, Inc.) you can do that too! You can volunteer on our activities, teach kids, and mingle with them. Who knows you can contribute to the potential success these kids could achieve?

• You can save a life

Most people who undergo counseling or those who are mentally unstable or they have problems that they have failed to resolve in the past. When people do not know how to manage their emotions, they are prone to depression or anger.

When you are immersed in this kind of volunteer work especially for kids, this is your chance to help them cope up with their problems. Even by just listening to their stories or letting them feel that you care can go a long way.

When Does a Child Need Intervention?

Our children are comparable to a blank slate. They need experience, guidance, and proper education so that we can mold them into becoming a good person. However, when children lack the attention and guidance they need upon growing up, this could cause certain problems with regards to their behavior.

We understand that raising a kid may be a difficult task, but with patience and right method of care, we can see good results in the long run. There are times that despite giving them attention and care, there will always be behavioral problems we cannot easily control.

Aggressive behavior
When our child is too prone to throwing tantrums or being too aggressive when dealing with people, we must not let this pass. We have to reprimand them for such bad behavior and let them realize that it is not appropriate.

Aggressiveness can also lead to being rebellious or becoming a bully. We do not want our child to become like this in the future. Perhaps, letting them realize the cost of their actions and make them understand why such things should not happen again.

If you see unnecessary aggressiveness in your child’s behavior, you must not hesitate to call us. Moreover, if you want to talk to our counselors at N.E.E.D, INC. (Nehemiah Educational and Economic Development, Inc.), you can call us at 407-661-1300 or visit our website www.needincfla.org for details.
