Interesting post about optimizing for content consumption (and curation) vs. creation:

In our personal lives we tend to optimize for one of two things: input or output. Reading or writing. Consuming or creating. The environment we live in – the prevailing culture – by default is optimized for consumption. Even our personal computers are turning into devices that are optimized for consumption! This is terrible and dangerous.

Probably some truth to this.

Thanks for visiting my Google+ Profile. (short URL: http://  I joined Google in Jan 2011 to combine my two passions - the Internet and China.  

In 2012, I started a new job as the Director/Head of Product Management for Display Advertising in Asia/Pacific, at Google...we moved to Shanghai in Jun 2012.

More accurately, my wife and kids live in Shanghai! I'll be traveling about 50% of the time to Beijing, Mountain View CA, New York City, and Tokyo to advance Google's progress on global Display Advertising projects.  But my "20%" job is coordinate our China country product strategy and I'm hopeful we can do more, within the constraints we've set for ourselves here at Google. (You know what those are...not censoring/filtering, not handing over people's info to the government, etc.)  I'd love to see Google be successful with Chromium and Android in China.

Before working as a salaried employee of Larry's 30k+ person startup, I was a startup founder myself a few times over.  I co-founded UpTake Networks, Loyalty Matrix (acquired 2006), and Netcentives (NASDAQ IPO 1999).  I also advised and invested small sums in startup companies in China and the US.

I've had the privilege of working at and studying at some great places.  Microsoft was my first job out of college.  I was also a Summer Associate at McKinsey & Company.  I also did some time at Intuit. I have an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB from Harvard University.  I was lucky to get into both of these programs.

The death of Steve Jobs caused me to think hard about what it is I really want to do with my life.  I'd like to use these 3 Words to help guide my focus in 2012.

We now live in Shanghai in the Century Park area of Pudong New District.  We still have a home in Los Altos that we'll probably return to eventually. :)

Elliott Ng is Director of Product Management for Display Advertising in APAC, responsible for display ad efforts in the region.  He joined Google in January 2011.  Prior to joining Google, Elliott advised entrepreneurs and consulted with startups on business/product strategy, most recently with companies in the online travel space in China and the US. Elliott previously founded UpTake Networks (travel information meta-search), Loyalty Matrix (customer analytics, acquired 2006), and Netcentives (loyalty program outsourcing, NASDAQ IPO 1999). He worked for Microsoft, McKinsey & Company, and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB from Harvard University.
