Short GoPro video of a large south swell hitting Kailua Kona, Hawaii. White Sands beach park is a dangerous shore break during large swells both summer and winter. Sand is pulled out exposing large rocks. Large winter swells can remove all of the sand for weeks at a time.

Another USGS video showing a close up of the spattering in Halemaumau vent. Spattering is maybe 20 - 30' high.

The summit lava lake is within an elliptical crater (unofficially called the Overlook crater), which has dimensions of approximately 160 m (520 ft) by 210 m (690 ft). Its 280' below the caldera floor.

What its like to be up close to such events. http://lavapix.com/gallery/hvnp-puu-oo-vent-stock/429073171dls/ Don't try and get close to Halemaumau. Off limits and one explosion leads to death.

For additional help with scale check out this USGS photo. The old lookout parking lot is to the right of the erupting vent/crater. Imagine cars there and how small a person would be standing at the rim. Zoom in and follow the path from the parking lot to the camera at the rim. Its 5' tall. http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/multimedia/uploads/multimediaFile-1187.jpg

This Quicktime movie shows spattering at the margin of the summit lava lake in Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. Spattering has been common at the lake, and when it occurs is easily visible from the public viewing area at Jaggar Museum. This video shows a closer view from the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu, which is closed to the public due to volcanic hazards.

New webcam view for Kilauea volcanoes Halemaumau vent eruption. By far the best one to date. The view might be from the camera in the lower photo. I say might because the cameras do get moved at times and there are many the public doesn't see the images from live. Link to the cameras.

This will give a better perspcective and idea of scale. Below is the caption from the USGS website. USGS photo from 4-30-15.

"Following several episodes of lava overflowing onto the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, the lava lake level remains high, and close to the rim of the Overlook crater. This photograph was taken from the southern rim of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, where a time-lapse camera keeps watch on the lava lake and overflow activity. The recent overflows are visible in the center of the photograph. HVO and Jaggar Museum are on the high point on the skyline near the top-center portion of the photograph. Mauna Loa is in the upper left portion of the photograph.#

Thank you for the update Bryan.  I believe it was in 1983 that Kilauea erupted and has been continuously flowing.  My son is now 35 years old.  He was just a toddler at 4 years old.  Madam Pele is still showing her power.

Kilauea volcanoes Halemaumau vent rock fall explosion video. Caught by one of the USGS webcams. Quicktime movie of the rockfall and subsequent explosion at 10:20 a.m., HST, on April 28, 2015. Rocks falling into the summit lava lake generated an explosion that threw large fragments of molten lava onto the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, 85 m (280 ft) above the lake. These fragments pose a significant hazard, and are one reason this area remains closed. #hawaii   #video   #wow   #news   #geology   #travel   #science

Deflategate hits Kilauea volcanoes Halemaumau vent lava lake. A steep deflation is ongoing and the lava is no longer visible from the parks viewing area. How long will it last ,who knows. Lake is showing signs of slumping too.

Yeah, another Hawaii Kilauea volcano update photo but, also a seismic map to give you an idea of what's going on there. The numerous small tremors show where magma is moving underneath the summit area. If these continue a new eruption is possible. If you find these updates interesting, +1 or comment and I'll keep posting.

Link to the full size update image.

This video is as much about the subtle sounds of the lava lake as it is the visual. Watch at full HD setting with headphones.

Shot with my Nikon D800, Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 lens and a Rode VideoMic Pro. Dolica professional tripod.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Kilauea volcano, Halemaumau vent eruption has escalated in recent days. The vent has started to overflow onto the crater floor. Its quickly building into a perched lava lake. This could lead to all kinds of possibilities like filling the crater, large fountain vents, hornitos, its going to be interesting. Historic eruptions like this back in the 1800's into the early 1900's lasted 100 years. Might need to expand the parking lot if this follows suite. Or a shuttle system.

What you are seeing is the filled vents boiling lava lake. The sounds are from rocks and gases being releases. The dark crusted plates are constantly moving and bumping into each other. That's much of the clanking sounds. As the lava circulates within the lake gases release. The lake has since overflowed covering a huge portion of the crater floor. It has a long ways to go to fill the caldera. Its presently 280' deep.

The viewing area is 1.2 miles away so, no close up shots can be had. When fewer people are there the sounds of rocks clanking or falling can easily be heard. Even some jetting sounds.

If you want to see images of past large perched lava lakes I was able to get up close to, visit the links below.

These were very rare opportunities that took tremendous effort to capture but, it was also extremely rewarding. The 2007 hike to the new and growing perched lava lakes came right on the heels of a 18 mile rt hike to Pu'u O'o vent where the fissure first opened. I hiked back down stopped at a friends for some sleep then we both did the 16+ mile hike to these lakes that would eventually turn into the TEB vent. I was pretty tired returning from the second hike.

Enjoy...

Kilauea volcano Halemaumau vent at present is a deflating perched lava lake. Examples of what a fully developed perched lava lake looks like up close can be seen at these links. All shot in 2007 & 2011.
