The new release for Hangouts iOS is out. It brings a ton of cool features that launched on Android in December. For GV users, this is our first release with support for SMS and Voicemail.

- Contacts tab now shows all your phone contacts. Clicking on one will give you option to start SMS or place a call
- Inline voicemail with transcription.
- voicemails player uses proximity sensor to play from speaker/earpiece

This is a small step towards providing a great Voice experience in Hangouts on iOS. Give it a try and let me know what you guys think.

Agents,

Over the last year and a half we've seen many inspiring stories of friendship, exploration and adventure from the Ingress community including epic feats like flying into an Alaskan storm on a bush plane, scaling mountains, and coordinating operations across international borders, demonstrating solidarity and friendship, all through something that’s become more than ‘just a game’ for many of us.  At Niantic Labs, we’re constantly amazed by these acts that demonstrate the power of community.

Today, we’re welcoming a new group of Agents into the community with the launch of Ingress for the iPhone & iPad: http://goo.gl/4bX9D5.  Ingress is now a true cross-platform mobile experience, with Agents across the world playing together in the same shared, global game.

For everyone who has been playing Ingress on Android, we hope this finally gives you a reason to reconnect with your iPhone friends :-)  Don’t forget to send them a link to Ingress Obsessed 3 - Epic Operation Megalodon!

This is a huge step forward for the Ingress community.  We can't wait to see what kinds of new adventures and friendships you create.  Don’t forget to share!

We also made a lot of improvements to video calls, both in terms of video quality and the in-call experience. Let us know what you think.
Hangouts 2.1 for Android: SMS improvements and a homescreen widget

Today we’re launching the newest version of Hangouts for Android, rolling out to the Play store (http://goo.gl/6Sv8V) over the next few days. Highlights include:

- Merged conversations: SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient are now combined into a single conversation. You can control whether you want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch, and different message types will be easy to tell apart in the conversation. Of course, you can always merge and unmerge conversations if you’d like.

- Simplified contact list: now there’s two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout With, and Phone Contacts — making it simpler to navigate, and easier to use for SMS.

- Homescreen widget: add the Hangouts widget to your homescreen for quick access to your recent conversations.

- Performance improvements: today’s update includes better quality video calls, as well as improved SMS and MMS reliability.

The new version will be available in the Play store (http://goo.gl/6Sv8V) this week, so download or update and let us know what you think!

Sharing what’s up our sleeve: Android coming to wearables

Today we’re excited to extend Android to wearables. And we’re starting with the most familiar wearable—watches. We’re already working with several consumer electronics manufacturers, including Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to bring you watches powered by Android Wear later this year. If you’re a developer, check out developer.android.com/wear to download a Developer Preview so you can tailor your existing app notifications for watches powered by Android Wear. Look out for more developer resources and APIs coming soon.
