The project, by Wellington architect Guy Marriage, cousin Briony Ellis and her husband Roger Wood, was one of the best we've seen on Grand Designs NZ. And that's due to the minimal budget, the home-grown Kiwi bach build helped by neighbour Johnny, and the stunning location – just above the high tide mark.

"There are great beaches all along the coast, but this is the jewel of the Manukau," says Joan.

"We were driving along Big Bay Road and Jock said, 'This farm has always attracted me'.

"It was mostly the outlook over the harbour that we loved. So, we rang and asked if they were interested. They were and the rest is history."

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday the Government was interested in making an offer on the home with the thought of preserving the historic property.

"I know there have been some discussions but I don't want to go too far on that as it is a negotiation, but yes of course we have an interest in preserving our history."
