We all know that water is the healthiest drink for overall health, but did you know that water plays an important role in mouth health? Water improves saliva production, which helps keep enamel strong and prevent tooth decay. It also washes debris away from teeth and helps to prevent plaque buildup. All of this makes water your mouth’s best friend! #DentalFAQ

Mouth guards – sometimes called mouth protectors – work by helping cushion a blow to the face, and minimizing the risk of broken teeth, or lacerating a lip, tongue or cheek. When choosing a mouth guard for your child, make sure that it easily fits in their mouth, and that it conforms to the shape of their teeth. Choose a custom fitting mouth guard for the best protection. #DentalFAQ

Did you know that China and India were the first to use toothpaste? Around 500 BC, ancient China used burnt egg shells, ashes and powdered herbs. The ancient Greeks used a similar recipe, only they liked a more abrasive toothpaste, so they included crushed bones and shells! Early versions of modern toothpaste began popping up in the 1850’s, when people began incorporating soap into their toothpaste. #DentalFAQ #DentalHistory

There are multiple cosmetic whitening products and procedures available, but are any of them safe for children? The AAPD advises that children don’t whiten all of their teeth until they have all of their permanent teeth. This ensures that their teeth will all be the same shade of white. Contact our office if you would like more information about whitening children’s teeth. #DentalFAQ

Did you know that apples are one of the best fruits for your teeth? That’s because they’re packed with fiber, which stimulates gums as they’re being eaten. They also stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleans teeth by rinsing away food particles and cavity causing bacteria.

#DentalFAQ Retainers are important pieces of oral care equipment, and should be properly maintained to keep them effective and clean. To clean your retainer, do the following:
1. Brush the retainer with liquid soap (like Dawn) and warm water.
2. Do not use toothpaste to clean your retainer, since the abrasives can scratch it and cause it to retain bad bacteria.
3. Store it in a case in your bathroom, or in soaking in a cup of distilled water somewhere out of reach of young kids and pets.

Flosing young teeth can be hard, especially if your child has new permanent teeth with wide gaps. Dental tape is a great solution to floss teeth with larger gaps. Dental tape is wide and flat and designed to be gentle on exposed gums. The width of dental tape makes it easier for small hands to grasp it, and makes it more forgiving when children use too much pressure while flossing. #ToothLove

X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, who was a Professor at Wuerzburg University in Germany. The first dental X-ray was taken in 1987, when Trophy Radiology in France introduced the world's first intraoral X-rays imaging sensor. #DentalFAQ #DentalHistory

Most children willingly give up their pacifier around age 3 or 4. But if your child is having a hard time bailing on the binky, try substituting their pacifier with another comforting item like a soft blanket or a stuffed animal. If an item doesn’t work, try easing their grief with soft singing, gentle swinging, or rocking them in a chair. #ToothLove
