That's a thought-provoking question, J.C.!  Expressions and speech patterns are to me, more important than accents as they define character.  But what a challenge you have set yourself with an accent from the Western Highlands and Islands - quite distinct from the eastern part of Scotland.  Or at least it will be for fellow Scots - although readers in other countries may not know that.  Correct me if I'm wrong but the Edinburgh brogue of Sir Sean Connery is the generic Scottish accent that is the one that has been exported around the world.  If you are able to access the BBC Sound Archive online they are a very useful source for accents.

Well said, J.C.  I particularly like point 7 - It Takes as Long as it Takes to write a really good book.... Harper Lee wrote only one masterpiece of a novel  it still sells 750,000 plus copies a year.....
