When I joined +SmugMug  a few years ago, there was a young water photographer whose work caught my eye. The beauty, the power, the simultaneous strength and vulnerability of bodies in crashing waves - I loved it all. That photographer is named +Sarah Lee and we just released an artist profile on Sarah as a part of our ongoing SmugMug Film series on our photography heroes. I couldn't be more excited to share this with the world.

More from Sarah at http://hisarahlee.com/. You can browse her prints and portfolio on her +SmugMug site: http://www.vivantvie.com/

Check out our whole series, including profiles of +Jessica Ambats +Von Wong  +Scott Kelby and +Devin Graham at http://youtube.com/smugmugfilms.

So excited to announce +SmugMug Films, a new series celebrating the world's most exciting photographers: World Premiere of SmugMug Films

For the past year, SmugMug's astonishingly good cinematographer Anton Lorimer has been traveling around the world, filming the photographers who inspire us every day. First film will debut next Monday.

Should be interesting! I recognized a few faces. I also saw what looked like an insane fisheye in that underwater clip.

Thanks +Robert Scoble !

The new SmugMug is awesome. Can this little company beat Yahoo and others?

All you have to do is see how excited photographers like +Thomas Hawk are: http://thomashawk.com/2013/07/smugmug-rolls-out-completely-redesigned-new-site.html or +Trey Ratcliff https://plus.google.com/u/0/+TreyRatcliff/posts/PSfCYsviPnh or +Karen Hutton https://plus.google.com/u/0/+KarenHutton/posts/ijQEXqr2eZZ or others who are great photographers here on Google+ (a search for "SmugMug" here this morning shows a bunch of others: https://plus.google.com/u/0/s/SmugMug ).

I shot these photos in a demo that founders +Don MacAskill and +Chris MacAskill gave me last week. Their wives (and dogs) were sitting on the floor, demonstrating just what a family affair this company is. I don't remember any other startup having such a family feel to it.

Which brings me to this point: can this company continue to find a way to compete with much bigger and better funded companies? I think so. Why: they are attracting great developer and customer service talent that other companies aren't. The singular focus they have on pro and advanced amateur photographers gives the service a focus that other places, including Google+ or Facebook, er, Instagram, will never be able to match.

I wish every startup entrepreneur could visit SmugMug. The lessons on how to build a company and not just a cool product are everywhere (it's very rare you'll see a cool product come out of a dysfunctional company).

I'd say to start with the wives and the dogs on the floor. That says volumes about the kind of company they are building and the product on the screen reflects those values.

I wish Silicon Valley had more companies like SmugMug.

"I think that if you start doing the things that you love, and you start sharing the things that you love, then sooner or later, people start hiring you to do the things that you love; for your passion, your vision, for what makes you unique, and because you’re the only person that can do whatever that thing is because you love it so much."

I stayed at Bristol Suites for a few days last summer, and it was perfect. The suites are spacious, clean, and very comfortable for a quick weekend stay or even much longer. The kitchen was generously stocked with plenty of dishes, pots and pans, and I liked that the soaps etc in the bathroom were locally made. Go Vermont! The location of the Suites was also unbeatable. It's right on the main street in town, and it was easy to step out for a bite at the local pub, a coffee across the street, or, more frequently, a scoop of ice cream at Lu Lu's. Bristol, in general, is a gorgeous, welcoming, and very friendly town. I hope I'll have the chance to visit again soon, and when I do, I'll stay at the Bristol Suites.
