I read The Polar Express to first graders today. There was plenty of discussion after the story about Santa's existence. " He has to be real," a seven year old explained. "You believe in science,right? Santa teleports. You can't not believe science so you have to believe in Santa." Argument apparently over.

I was reading The Night Before Christmas to a class of first graders leaving off the last word in each line. I got to the part that says," Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the...And a earnest first grader chimed in with "hash." "It is like corned beef" he explained. "It is gross which is why I think they threw it up."
