"Learning gains has increasingly become apparent within the HE literature, gained traction in government policies in the UK, and are at the heart of Teaching Excellence Framework (TFL). As such, this raises a question to what extent teaching and learning environment can actually predict students’ learning gains using principles of learning analytics.

In this presentation, which is joined work with University of Surrey and Oxford Brookes, I will focus on some preliminary findings based upon developing and testing an Affective-Behaviour-Cognition learning gains model using longitudinal approach.

The main aim of the research is to examine whether learning gains occur on all three levels of Affective-Behaviour-Cognition model and whether any particular student or course characteristics can predict learning gains or lack of learning and dropout. "At the Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference in 2014, The Handbook of Learning Analytics was conceived
to support a scientific view of the rapidly growing ecosystem surrounding educational data.

A need was identified for a Handbook that could codify ideas and practices within the burgeoning fields of learning
analytics and educational data mining, as well as a reference that could serve to increase the coherence of
the work being done and broaden its impact by making key ideas easily accessible.

Through discussions over 2014-2015 these dual purposes were augmented by the desire to produce a general resource that could be used in teaching the content at a Masters level. It is these core demands that have shaped the publication ofthe Handbook: rigorous summary of the current state of these fields, broad audience appeal, and formatted with educational contexts in mind."

"In February we ran a workshop in London with university staff and a couple of students to gather requirements for a student app.

As with the previous event it was a challenge to keep the group focussed on the applications of learning analytics without straying into all the useful things that apps could do for students.

Some of them aren't what are normally considered learning analytics applications but they all rely on data - some of it new data such as students being able to specify their interests in more detail in order to receive targetted materials and details of events."

"The workshop accepts contributions from researchers, teachers and developers that are considering the adoption of a novel learning analytics solution in a particular context.

1 Examples/cases of actual learning analytics adoption processes.

2 Conceptual frameworks to help us analyze how learning analytics is adopted at the classroom level, or to support inter-stakeholder communication during such adoption processes."
