Top tips for Winter Gardens

Gardens can look a little worse for wear at this time of year, but here are our top tips for keep it well kept through the winter.

The front
Any space at the front of your property is a bonus. If you have a large parking space, think about buying a few plant pots to keep the front of your home looking green. Boxes full of plants attached to the windowledges are great at adding a bit of colour without taking up too much room. For those of you who have delightful front gardens, keep them tidy during the winter by clearing away any leaves and triming the edges of the grass. Plants might not be flowering at this time of year, but a few evergreen shrubs in different shades will add something of interest. Go for Aucuba, Photinia and Holly or any other tough shrubs that will take the cold.

Lawns
The good thing about winter is that the grass barely grows so you don't have to brave the cold too much to mow the lawns. Without any attention, however, lawns can start to look messy so opt for a light high cut ever so often. Also, keep checking for any dead leaves that may have fallen from trees and clear them away to prevent your grass from suffocating.

Furniture
Wooden garden furntiure doesn't wear very well in the winter time, so store it away when it is wet and frosty. If you don't have a lot of storage space, you can buy covers to keep it protected. Or opt for metal furniture which has been treated against rust. You could even make the most of your metal furniture with large woolly blankets and cushions for when you have brave guests to stay.

Ornaments
If you want to add something a little fun to your garden, go for stone ornaments. They wear beautfully in the winter weather and by next year will weathered perfectly to look at home in your garden. If this is a little daring, go for a bird table to attract the wildlife into your garden.
