Unexpectedly Great - Review of Don Jon
After writing the first paragraph of my review of the movie Don Jon (2013) I realized that this is the kind of movie I can't say anything about - no matter how vague - without spoiling it, so... Hello Sweetie...

I have to admit that before watching Don Jon (2013) I thought it was going to be a bunch of superficial, sex-focused bullshit. This was also exactly how the movie started out. It wasn't bad - but it wasn't great either. Then something happened.

Little by little I noticed that something felt off about the superficial movie I was watching; it wasn't superficial. I was expecting Don Jon to be a certain way and the movie knew this and used it to trick me in a subtle, simple, and amazing way.

The realization that Don Jon had 3-dimensional characters, interesting plot lines, and well-constructed social commentary wasn't something that hit me all at once; it rather occurred to me in small doses at the time until, in a few smaller scenes, exploding in the subtlest powerful way ever which left me breathless. If it wasn't for the fact that I was speechless in astonishment some of the scenes would have had me yelling out "FUCK!" in utterly realization about the significance of something which previously had been presented in a way that made me think it was meaningless.

Don Jon is a great movie. It was A LOT of explicit sex - or rather, porn - but this is part of a larger ruse and evolution of both movie, characters, and viewer. Don Jon is a piece of art - a damn interesting and entertaining piece of art. A pleasant change from all the boring normal romantic comedies.
