Enjoy!

This Week's Winner...

A few weeks ago I’d said that there were too many green wallpapers lately. I think this boils down to the fact nature offers some of the best wallpapers for our computer, plus green is a calming colour, and god knows I need to calm down sometimes whilst looking at my laptop after a few hours! This week, however, I thought I’d jazz it up with a rather peculiar capture.

Can you guess what it is yet? Have a scroll down quickly and check out the sample image. There was no Photoshop trickery involved here. No motion blurs added and no colour saturation tweaked, but it’s still a very abstract image. If I told you it was taken from inside a vehicle, would you get any closer to guessing?

+Lars Christian Nygård took this from the inside of his car when he went through a carwash! What you are looking at here are the drops of water on his windscreen and the coloured brushes whizzing around. Brilliant! Who’d have thought it?

Lars is a radiographer living and working in Elverum, Norway. “As a hobby I enjoy macro and nature photography. I like to photograph flowers, insects, spiders, reptiles and animals. Also sometimes I do landscape and portraits. Recently I’ve been focusing a little on creating desktop wallpapers. It’s a genre that requires interesting photos with colors or details, but also flat space. It needs to be both beautiful and relaxing to the eye.”

OK, so how was this week’s winning image captured? “The car wash photo was captured as I (suprise) sat in my car in the car wash. I saw the colors of the brushes and the water on my windscreen and though it might make a great wallpaper.
Recently I’ve been paying some attention to lichen. It’s so colorful and full of beauty, but yet so easy to overlook.”

You can check out Lars on Google Plus of course where “I have found G+ to be a great source of inspiration for my photography. So many talented photographers keep my stream filled with wonderful photos”, says he. You can also follow more of his photography at his blog. Altogether now: “workin’ at the car wash, yeah, the car wash, girl!”

A superb winning wallpaper this week, quite fantastic! Here's the summary with the relevant download link below. Desktop wallpapers for iphone, Galaxy, PC and all that guff!

There's been a lot of talk about 'super moon' this week, with a plethora of lunar-themed images appearing all over the internet. Supermoon Schupermoon, pah! You want to see a real night-time sky shot? Then look no further than this week's incredible submission from +Chandra Mulpuri.

Before I launch into that I do just want to give a special shout-out to +Remo Primatesta. I've mentioned Remo before and he has been patiently submitting work to wallpaperwednesdaycontest for many weeks now. I can tell you now that I will be short-listing Remo's work next week, not least for his consistency and patience, but mainly for the quality of his macro shots. If you think I'm exaggerating, just take a look at the shot of the iris at the link below. Hang on on there, Remo, fingers crossed for next week ;)

Back to the night sky and over to Chandra, a photographer from Bay Area, California. “This was taken on March.17th, within Denali National Park, Alaska where the Alaskan Railway line cuts through the park. It's actually a Panoramic shot with 3 different shots combined - all of them taken at 16mm APS-C at ISO 800, f/2.8 for 5s.”

I've been watching Chandra's submissions on G+ recently and they really are quite extraordinary. If you like his stuff catch him on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/chandra.mulpuri) and, of course, on GooglePlus. https://plus.google.com/u/0/100809549323347785977/posts

This Week's Winner Is Announced...

Around the world the weather is very different. Whilst we swelter in the tropical heat of India our neighbours are speaking to their family in Canada where it is snowing. Selecting a desktop background, therefore, has to reflect this and since the last few images have been spring-related, I thought I’d mix it up a little with this week’s winner. The other thing I was getting conscious of was that the last three winning images were rather green! Green is my wife’s favourite desktop background colour but note to self and to those submitting images over the next few weeks: let’s move away from green!

This week’s winning image comes from +Oleh Gura , a photographer from Kiev, Ukraine. It’s a beautiful image of Drahobrat, Ukraine’s highest ski resort with a base elevation at 1300 m. The image was taken with a Nikon D60, Nikkor 18-55/3.5-5.6 VR and was then post-processed with Photoshop CS3. The distinct blur, which is almost like a tilt-shift effect, was created using the Alien Skin Bokeh plug-in. Everyone loves a bit of bokeh but it’s great to see it applied to something a little different.

Over to Oleh: “I’m 32 and live and work in Kiev. I’m working as major technologist on a small confectionery factory. As a hobbyist photographer, I like to take a little weekends trips around my country to take some pictures. I have an old and cheap Nikon D60 with kit lenses, 18-55 and 55-200, but I like it. I’m also interested in old film cameras.”

Well keep up that interest, Oleh, because it is clearly paying off!

Wallpaper Contest Winner Announced!

New York, New York, so good they used it twice!

This week's winning image is absolutely extraordinary and not something I have seen much of, either in this contest or on GooglePlus. It's not the first time Manhattan has been featured, though. If you cast your mind all the way back to WallpaperWednesdayContest #02 you may remember a rather splendid tilt-shift effort by +Tom Gehrke.

+Simos Xenakis's winner this week is of Upper East Side, Manhattan, and a view many of us are quite familiar with, but just look at the effect he has created. What wins Simos kudos, however, is the fact his effort was all done in-camera and not Photoshop. Yep, study it and weep, Adobe-monkeys, I didn't believe it either!

"It was taken with a slower shutter speed using intentional camera movement to create the blurring effect. No Photoshopping or computerized blurring going on here - the effect was achieved strictly straight out of camera. In post I just did some Lightroom tonal adjustments, tweaking of the colors, and applied a wider crop."

Even more amazing is that Simos has only been shooting with a dSLR for a few months, which is why he doesn't yet have a portfolio. However you can find all his other work on this G+ profile, so if you like this piece, please go tell him so here!

Oh, one more thing. If you are wondering why we're a day late, it's because we had a plethora of excellent submissions last week and I notified a number of the photographers to get in touch. Coincidentally they were all out of town until yesterday but they've all now come back and I have a list as long as my arm of potentials. Expect more excellent photography next week!

Check out the link below for all the free download links.

Wow, thanks so much, +#WallpaperWednesdayContest ! So glad that I finally participated. I have been thinking of submitting this for a few weeks wondering if it was good enough. Very surprised (and honored) as I never win things in life, haha :-)

The GooglePlus hashtag weekly photographic competition
Introduction
This is the official GooglePlus Page for the weekly hashtag competition, #WallpaperWednesdayContest. It is curated by Jamie Furlong. Please add me to your circles!

The concept is very simple: submit a photograph or painting (using the hashtag #WallpaperWednesdayContest) you think would make a great computer wallpaper. Think of images your friends would like as their ipad, desktop or smartphone wallpaper. The above images are previous winners.

Each week a winner is selected and their winning image is converted into 13 different types of wallpaper for people to download! You name, blog, flickr, 500px links are advertised along with your image, bringing glory and recognition to you, and joy to those who download your image as a wallpaper.

Bear in mind the image has to be suitable for widescreen, dual-monitor, and square formats.

The Rules
  1. Upload your image to GooglePlus (digital manipulation is allowed but it should be a photograph or a painting). You may upload as many images as you wish but only one image per post is permitted (that is, if you wish to submit multiple images each one should exist in its own post. Do not submit galleries).
  2. Tag your post with #WallpaperWednesdayContest
  3. Tag your image with +WallpaperWednesdayContest
  4. Add ‘Curated by +Jamie Furlong’ in your post.
  5. Email ‘furlongphoto@gmail.com‘ a low-res (1500px maximum), non-watermarked version of the shot along with some information about the shot, about yourself and any links to your work (blog, flickr, 500px etc).
That's it! I do the rest of the work by selecting a winner and then reformatting the image into 13 different sizes to be posted up in the winner's gallery.

Bask in your glory and know that someone, somewhere, may be viewing your image on their smartphone somewhere in the world!

If you need further inspiration, check out the previous winners at this link: http://www.jamiefurlongphotography.com/wallpaper/. Click on the image itself to view a preview in lightbox, or click on the title to see the whole article and the download links.

All images are only used for this non-commercial competition. I do not make money from them, do not give them to anyone else and you hold complete copyright over them.
