Whoa... that's 345 thousand Parma hams per km sq. per year! That is one HELL of a lotta ham! nom!
The Great Hall of Hams. By Xeni Jardin at 12:20 pm Friday, Jan 27. A worker checks in a special room where the Parma hams are hung to dry in Langhirano near Parma. Prosciutto di Parma can only be prod...

I submit that, prima facie, they supply 'Platform as a Utility' right now. Announcements over the past weeks makes me think of AWS as moving inexorably to enabling what might be thought of as 'hybrid' Platforms, which permit (sorry, Hoff) cloudbursting in ways that remove storage and application mobility from the concerns of a developer-operator. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck ...

Money quote: "...even if Hadoop makes it easy to throw more hardware at a problem, wasting resources with bad code in MapReduce tasks comes with a noticeable and measurable cost."

It's a bit of a silly example really. You've got a reduce portion that is itself ridiculously parallel, so you bound the output set to what can fit in memory and that gets you 2 minutes, then run it in java rather than interpreted, which incidentally skips the streaming and that gets you another minute and a half. All for an example and data set which a hell of a lot slower than it does on a command line 'wc'. Of course there is overhead for using scripting implementation, but they get delivered faster. And of course there is a cost to using solutions not tailored to your data, but - chances are - we already have them.

"Inspiration and work ethic — they ride right next to each other…. Not every day you’re gonna wake up and the clouds are gonna part and rays from heaven are gonna come down and you’re gonna write a song from it. Sometimes, you just get in there and just force yourself to work, and maybe something good will come out."

Excellent tour of the forces leading to use of Hadoop for Social Nets and other verticals that require reasonably performant capture and on-boarding of data. It also points out some of the inherent problems of Hadoop in it's 'raw form' with respect to performance and usability.
In this slidehow, Iván de Prado explains in some detail why you might want to consider building a scalable vertical search engine with Hadoop, showing when to...

So, the question now becomes: at what point does the scale of data, or demands of simultaneous use put MongoDB into distress?
