Go Digital for Mammography
#obgynnet   #breasthealth

Digital mammography resulted in lower recall and biopsy rates than screen film mammography, reinforcing the positive results of the technology advances, according to an evaluation of data from the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program.

The results, published in the journal Radiology, suggest that digital mammography is associated with less harm to patients and that the transition from film to digital screening lowered rates of false-positive findings, the authors concluded. The study allowed performance measures and outcomes of screen-film mammography (SFM) and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) before, during, and after the transition.

How Distressing Is IVF for Patients?
#obgynnet   #IVF   #Infertility

Strong social support is helpful in reducing the distress faced by in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients, according to a review of existing research on the psychosocial factors associated with the process.

Researchers reported in the journal Human Reproduction Update that there is a paucity of research using positive emotional outcome measures, such as happiness and life satisfaction, to quantify emotional adjustment. Instead, in a review of 23 studies, all but one used negative emotional outcomes measures to evaluate the adjustment.

Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes and Chronic Hypertension
#obgynnet   #fetalmonitoring

Pregnant women with chronic hypertension have an increased risk of preeclampsia, cesarean section, and preterm delivery, researchers noted in a meta-analysis of 55 studies.

The findings of adverse outcomes also point to a need for a consistent trial design to study women with chronic hypertension, the authors suggested. They also emphasized the importance of increased surveillance for women with chronic hypertension and suggested the use of pre-pregnancy counseling. Finally, the researchers concluded that more work is needed to develop strategies for predicting women at greatest risk, determining optimal drug treatments, and reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Back to Basics: The Well-Woman Visit
#obgynnet   #obgyn #womenshealth

The old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” becomes more meaningful every day.

As ob/gyns, we are often the primary care providers for many of our patients. This designation allows us the unique privilege and responsibility of providing optimal medical care to women of all ages and all walks of life. In doing so, we must help women recognize that preventive care is just as important as point of care.

Improved Training Is Key to Better Outcomes for Robotic Surgery
#obgynnet   #laparoscopy   #hysterectomy

a Vinci training is taking on new meaning. For those who prefer using the robot over traditional laparoscopic surgery, the news over the past year has been less than positive. Unreported adverse effects, the cost of the robot, and doubts about surgical skill have been a concern to hospitals, medical professionals, and patients who have read negative reports.

Professionalism, Second Opinions, and Keeping Ego Out of Medicine
#obgynnet

In recent years, there has been a push to teach professionalism to medical students. This is in part a response to a perceived decrease in respect for physicians by the general public. Much of the emphasis on teaching professionalism has been on treating patients with respect and placing the needs of the patient over our own needs. I support this effort but would like to emphasize a different aspect of professionalism that seems to get less attention: the relationship we have with our colleagues.
