Tombstone, who placed 1st seed in all of BattleBots, went up against the underdog Bite Force. Armed with just a pair of pinching (but surprisingly powerful) jaws, you’d think Bite Force wouldn’t stand a chance against the kinetic brute that is Tombstone. We thought so too. However, Bite Force proved us all wrong and was able to use its somehow indestructible wedge to jam Tombstone and its deadly blade. The match went on and Tombstone’s inner parts started smoking, and that’s when Tombstone’s main and only weapon failed. At the same time, one of Bite Force’s treads stopped working, but by that time, it was obvious that Team Bite Force had dealt more damage.
Team Bite Force was crowned BattleBots Champion for 2015 and received the most prestigious award of "geekdom" — The Giant Nut.

Recent events have made drones a new enemy of firefighters, but this new video could rekindle their relationship. Using a DJI Phantom 3, YouTube user “Mac Noober” attached a plastic bag containing water and flew it over a small, controlled fire. It took about a minute to properly position the bag over the fire, use the fire to melt the bag, and then put out the fire completely. A first of its kind, this could potentially spark a new use for drones rather than just using them to shoot pretty video and capture action sports.

Scared of those pesky microscopic germs that cover your kitchen tabletops, tile floors, and even exercise mats? Don’t sweat it, UVe has you covered. Launched on Kickstarter by a company that has experience in making other kitchen-related gadgets, UVe is a Roomba-like robot that uses the power of UV light to eliminate microscopic germs. It’s looking to raise $50,000 and has already raised $30,000 in 15 days.

Due to recent events involving drones getting in the way of emergency responders, a California lawmaker has introduced the idea that first-responders should be allowed to disable and take down any drones interfering with emergency operations.

Well, it’s been an eventful week for drones. The maker behind that pistol-wielding drone got caught, Sony has revealed its new drone service, and drones getting rescued by other drones is actually a thing.

Some robots are just plain stupid while others are self-aware. NAO, a consumer-grade humanoid robot used for research and education, recently underwent an experiment to test for self-awareness. The experiment was led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor Selmer Bringsjord and it consisted of three NAO robots set up like the “The King’s Wise Men.”

This will come in handy the next time a fire breaks out in the woods and ravages a few hundred square inches.

PixiePath is an early-stage startup that’s making drone fleet management as simple as opening up a web-based program in your web browser. Its service is cloud-based, runs right off of your web browser with the help of an Android companion app, and is now open to beta testers.

By now I’m sure everyone in the drone community has seen this video. Drones have expanded their abilities from photography and surveying to shooting guns. On July 10th, Austin Haughwout, a mechanical engineering student from Central Connecticut State University, posted the video above title “Flying Gun” to YouTube. As you can see, the drone has the ability to stay in control during and after the shots are fired. Clearly some engineering work when into this feat. He most likely used a feedback control algorithm that senses the forces from the gunshot being fired and compensates by controlling the rotors.

I think it's legality is based on ownership (the same for firearms themselves), and the location and height they are used

Firearm wielding drones (if used properly) would be perfect for LEOs and the military

Where the problem comes in, is if a problem occurs (if the drone crashes or auto-lands, or if it's flying low enough where somebody could snatch it midair), then the firearm could easily end up in the wrong hands

Now the firearm could easily be replaced with less deadly devices, like say a stun gun, or other, safer forms of projectiles

Now what this really comes down to, is that drones are essentially just small unmanned aircrafts (like a helicopter, hence the names quadcopter, octocopter, or hexicopter, just the name of how many blades it has), you can strap anything to them, and do almost anything with them (record birds-eye footage, deliver packages, unman the front lines in war, move things to higher unreachable areas, dissipate riots, spray for Mosquitos or even send medical supplies on call)

But in any of these situations, drones are not foolproof, bad things can and will happen if things go wrong

Suidobashi Heavy Industry (or Team Japan) accepted MegaBots’ challenge to the ultimate robot smackdown, but under the condition that robot melee combat is allowed. The MegaBot is equipped with large gas-powered, paintball-shooting guns, but throwing punches isn’t their strong suit. However, MegaBots has said “bring it on” to Japan in their latest over-glorified update video.

Have you ever wanted to bring your origami paper crane to life? With popupCAD you can design origami-inspired robots and watch them spring into motion. Dan Aukes and Rob Wood of the Harvard Microrobotics Lab and Wyss Institute of Harvard University have created an open-source platform for designing laminate machines that fold up and move around in unique ways. These micromechanisms can be any shape or size, and can move by walking, swimming or even flying. They are initially flat and consist of many layers made of different materials. The structure is designed in such a way that it folds along the “weaker” parts with the help of actuators, and springs into action.
