A Florida Chamber of Commerce task force has reported that “Floridians pay an additional $1.4 billion in hidden health care taxes to cover health care received by the #uninsured.” They went on to say that #Florida residents with #insurance pay around $2,000 for each hospital stay to cover the cost of the uninsured. Florida comes in third among the states for the percentage of uninsured.

Supporters of the expansion of the health care law claim that it would reduce the ranks of the uninsured.  The state Chamber is currently weighing in on the rising health care cost in Florida, but acknowledges that the cost of uninsured residents is high.

The Department of Health and Human Services released a report showing that 673,255 people in Florida selected plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace leading up to the December 15th deadline where coverage began January 1st. Around 94% of people who selected plans in the first month of open enrollment were determined eligible for financial assistance that would lower their monthly premium. More data is still necessary to determine how the newly insured are impacted by claim denials and underpayment. #Florida   #insurance

What do I do if my #insurance company denies my claim?

The insurance company will interpret your policy in a way that is most favorable to them, which means that they may interpret exclusions broadly and your perils narrowly.

A common reason that insurance companies use for denying claims is that the cause of the damage was not covered by the policy or that it falls within an exclusion.

It is important to note that you do not have to accept a loss if your claim is denied. It may be in your best interests to review your options with an attorney who can argue your case to the insurance company and pursue the compensation promised by your policy. #Tampa #Florida

Florida legislators have introduced the White-Miskell Act, which will regulate commercial #parasailing operators and require them to have up to $2 million in #liability coverage. The owner and/or operator of the parasailing vessel must have a bodily injury policy of at least $1 million per occurrence for an annual total amount of $2 million. This act may help reign in unsafe parasailing business practices and provide more protections to accident victims. #insurance

Starting in 2015, #Florida residents may be paying an average of 13.2% more for individual #healthcare insurance. The rate increase is due partly to the fact Florida had less healthy people than they anticipated.  Also, Affordable Care Act enrollment issues  led to an increase in premium rates, which discouraged many people from signing up, leaving mostly sick members to enroll. The high premiums in 2015 are reflective of the increase in per-unit costs of medical services as well as increase in the utilization of medical services.

#Florida is one of the states with the largest numbers of immigrants in the nation who bought health insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchange. #Immigrants are at risk of losing their coverage if they fail to send in proof that they are legally in the United States. This is due to the fact that many of their immigrant and citizenship information that the government has on file conflicts with what they wrote on their health insurance. According to immigration advocates, immigrants aren't responding to government notices about it due to a language barrier.

Video about volunteers for the Hillsborough County Bar Association's "Ask A Lawyer Program." The HCBA volunteer members partnered with Fox13 where viewers can call in and get free legal advice. The "Ask a Lawyer Program" takes place the first Thursday of each month.

Watch my interview with Fox 13 News where we discussed problems with insurance claims resulting from vandalism, theft, fire damage and lighting damage. Individuals should be careful during the application process to read everything and make sure nothing is omitted and no false statements are made. Mistakes could increase the changes that the insurance company tries to cancel the insurance policy.
