Here is a rather long, very personal piece I wrote for The Lifted Brow about a record by The Green Pajamas, high school crushes, and grown-up love. Egregiously self-indulgent emotional listening habits are disclosed, and names are named.

Many, many thanks to +Ronnie Scott for running this, and for commissioning the wonderful accompanying illustration, which does look a LOT like the discman I used in high school.

Tonight at 8pm! At the Rock Shop! I'll play some songs! You might like them! You should come!

I wrote something about this Friday's 1.USA.gov hackathon over at the bitly blog. It should be a very cool event, and I hope that you will spread the word and check it out!

Before I started at bitly, I never really gave much thought to data. I knew data was valuable, since spammers and other nefarious jerks were always trying to get mine. But I've only recently begun to understand the depth of that value, and the extent to which intelligent, interesting data analysis can make my own data more valuable to me. Many thanks to the bitly data team (+Hilary Mason +Brian Eoff and Mike Dewar) for the ongoing edumacation.

Google "Search by image" makes it pretty easy to find out exactly who somebody is using only their picture. This should have interesting ramifications for sites like OKCupid, where profiles are rich in information but theoretically not "personally identifiable." If you have photos of yourself up anywhere that you DON'T want to be identified, and those photos live elsewhere on the Internet (such as on a Facebook page, or anywhere else where that they could be scraped and associated with your name), I would recommend changing those photos.
