Tether your PC with your Unlimited Data Plan

If you've been following me recently, you know I've been working on a root/jailbreak-less USB Tether solution for Android.

Tether has just gone live in the Android Market (and Amazon AppStore too shortly, I hope).

Go get it before it gets pulled off the Market by +Verizon Wireless (and other such crony carriers)!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

I'll be giving out a bunch of redeem codes over the next few days! Remember to shoot me a 5 star rating! ;)

Oh, here's some now! (all used up now, sorry! more to come soon!)

Thanks:-) going to give 5 stars.

Must be Cricket...or small carriers...

Might be a stupid question but do we use Google drivers for Nexus S 4G or Samsung?

I have downloaded on my pc and my droid og cm 7.1 but speed is only 10 meg per sec... Thanks Koush..

Bought to support your work even though I already have one I use.

Awesome, tested it out before and paid for, thanks again

Damn, somehow managed to be on g+ just after this got posted and still missed out on those codes(noticed when double checking that it said 1 minute ago for post time)! Even tried all four! Either you've got some serious followers or there's a shitload of night owls happening to prowl g+ tonight! Gonna go check this out on a computer now though, and if its any bit as good as cwm, you've earned those 5 stars! To anybody else reading this-if you don't have the cwm premium license, I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you its worth every penny, has saved my G2 a few times having those features!! Keep it up, Koush!

Let us throw more money at you Koush! Haha. I've paid for Rom Manager Premium on two different Google accounts! (Mine and the Wife's) Should that qualify for a code? lol

Hi Koush, I had a query on ROM Manager. Asked it a couple of times over Twitter, but no reply :)

+Paul O'Brien I don't imagine you need a code; UK doesn't seem to be as retarded about data usage? (thanks again for the galaxy nexus!)

may sound like a stupid question but my htc desire with stock rom already has usb tethering. Why don I need an app?

Big thanks man, works great

Everybody better snatch this up now even if they don't need it, no telling when you may need to side load it on some locked down device in the future ;)

+Marco Didonna Because (just like the wifi tethering) it will say you need a separate data plan. It does for me anyway, on sprint.

Maybe a stupid question, but isn't tethering available by default in newer android releases? I use tetherjng every now and then, and I didn't need to install a thing.

+Sander Deryckere Yes and no. Some carriers don't allow you to use the tethering without an extra charge. Some phones don't have the option at all. And USB tether was removed in Ice Cream Sandwich. (there is only wifi tether)

+Koushik Dutta I really do and I have used it...I haven't been billed any different from surfing from my smartphone...

+Sander Deryckere fully depends on the carrier. Tethering is "available", but the tethering that is baked into the phone generally has at minimum a provision check to ensure that you bought a tethering plan from the carrier. Exceptions being unlocked versions of phones like the Galaxy Nexus or similar.

+Koushik Dutta It's been mentioned before... But would it be possible to "reverse" this, where it shares your laptops connection to an Android device?

+Josh McAllister Not possible without rooting the phone unfortunately. And it would require pretty much a rewrite. (ie, java/android code ported to pc, and node.js code ported to android)

even though i dont need this, i'll get anything with name clockworkmod on it. :D i even get a nexus s cuz of Koush. now time for Galaxy Nexus next month! :D

Getting a error on Epic 4G Touch running Cyanogen Kang. ADB is functioning correctly, I can see the PC app connect to the device, then it errors out. I looked around in CWM folders for a log but didnt find one. here is log from PC app http://pastebin.com/34V0inaw
sammy drivers are installed and adb works from command line.
thanks!

+cordell abney I've seen this before. Are you familiar with adb, I assume you are? Try adb kill-server, then restart Tether. That always fixed it for me. What OS are you on? Linux or Mac or Windows?

I say pulled by Tuesday on VZW :). Congrats on the launch Koush!

Koushik Dutta I am on Win7, when I killed server it gave same error, but this time I got error in command line as well. "ADB server didnt ACK". Once adb server finally starts it shows my device, but it is "offline" I am guessing its my rom, not sure if you seen the CM7 kang on rootz but thats what I am running (Epic 4G Touch). I tried reinstalling all drivers, rebooting PC/device and get the same. I will try from a touchwiz rom this afternoon, heading out for work here shortly. Thanks for the awesome work! I will deff be purchasing before app gets pulled, heck gonna purchase now :) Thanks again!
Thanks for buying from Koushik Dutta on Android Market!

+cordell abney Try adb-killserver and then reboot your device. Your adb state seems hosed. This happens to me every few weeks (outside of tether use, just general android nonsense). It's really annoying :)

+Koushik Dutta I have a question - If I am running CM7 - which comes with the built in tether - why would I worry about this app? I love your work - just not sure why I would need this.

+Koushik Dutta Thanks. I use DeskSMS hourly... can't live without it. ROM Manager Pro as well. I'm sure I'll send you more money soon :-)

I use VirtualBox on Windows; can you expand on how that may "interfere" with Tether?

Alright, I just gave it 5 starts! (sorry, I had to do that! lol)

+Brendan LeFebvre It may work with virtualbox. it's not confirmed. I say there may be issues because virtual box has it's own virtual network interfaces.

try it and let me know

love this Koush - awesome work!
Would it be possible to have something like this for Android tablets? I'm getting ready to get a Lenovo or the Transformer Prime.

If this tether app is for non-rooted phones, and most people know +Koushik Dutta ClockworkMod Recovery and ROM Manager on their rooted phones, who is the app for? Personally, I hope it's a great success for those that need it. However, since my devices are all rooted...I have nothing to test it on.

I am rooted, and installed it on my computer/phone to check it out. my neighbor is on Verizon, and does not have a rooted phone. Going to tell him about this when he gets back home. Great app!

Just downloaded. Even if it doesn't work properly for me, I'm still giving 5 stars just for being in development. Koush, you're the best!

Downloaded, installed and am currently using the app. Had to "uninstall" EasyTether on my Mac to get it running. Seems to do its job but I did like EasyTether automatically firing up/down the network interface whenever I tethered my Nexus S to the Mac. As for uplink/downlink speed I have not made any serious comparison but have a subjective feeling that this application offers slower network interfaces than EasyTether does ... have to check that.

Thanks for the app +Koushik Dutta. You might want to say in the description where everybody can get the drivers and software though, instead of only stating that it's needed.

Mind if i ask about a problem i'm experiencing here or should i go to the other post?

You the man Koush! your work is always appreciated. i've bought just about all the apps you have, even tried out koushhead clock.

Btw, since you released the app on a weekend I'll give it until Tuesday for VZW to pull out off the market

Thanks awesome work & so fast too!

I just went to the market link and download it it as an update. Should I pee on installing the alpha from my computer?

When will the plus version be coming out? Will we be be seeing wireless anytime soon?

+Koushik Dutta Brilliant work! It was super easy to install.
I work from home but sometimes need to take my laptop out with me so this saves my life for the occasional tether, as the times I need it when out and about don't justify a separate data plan.
You're my hero! Pity there's only 5 stars to give on the market ;o)

You are the BEST +Koushik Dutta !!!!!!!!!!!! I have a VZW GNex but haven't felt the need to root it, yet! Great phone already! I have always loved CWM on previous handsets and now I get to use your wizardry on my unrooted love-of-my-life! It works great!! I wish you and your family the best that life has to offer!! Thank you soooooooo much!
Ken Chu

Great work! Now if we can tether the phone to a wifi tablet...

Oops, so much for speech to text on the phone, in the sun. ( I will leave it there for everybody to laugh at.)

The question was should I be un installing the program on the computer before first use?
CJ C

It's funny in a way, I guess, that t-mobile includes a way to tether via USB -- both to give internet to the PC (like a GSM/WCDMA modem) as well as to GET internet from the PC. Just need the right driver installed. Oh wait, the driver was included on my factory MicroSD card. They also have the WiFi Access Point built-in to the phone and the ROM, so clearly T-Mo WANTS you to use the phone to its full potential... Shame other carriers make you pay more for that and block apps and such.

Can anyone point me to somewhere I can learn more about development for unrooted phones. I know there is a no root Screenshot app just curious as to what else is out there

Awesome job Koush. Bought it with in-app billing and it seemed to work.

Thank you for offering a freebie version and the code giveaway to some lucky few

for galaxy nexus: is connect as a media device same as charge only. tether tells me to connect as charge only, but no option to do so on the GN

Add me if you want to increase activity in your circles!

Can someone explain why I need this? if its just USB tether didn't we have several options like this already, and most phones these days have it stock installed in the firmware?

This is perfect. I think the best part is how it will download the clients and drivers for you, absolutely perfect. Well played, sir.

I don't think I would have tagged +Verizon, lol. You only tipped them off.

Installed this on my phone and laptop but unable to get it working. It starts connecting to phone and then I get this error. Results from starting Tether activity:
{ '0': null,
'1': 'Starting: Intent { cmp=com.koushikdutta.tether/.TetherActivity }\r\r\nWarning: Activity not started, its current task has been brought to the front\r\r\n',
'2': '' }
Running windows 7 32bit and phone is a galaxy nexus. I installed the drivers from your site. Any ideas?

Koush (or anyone else), can you post detailed instructions for installing the Linux Tarball? I'm running Linux Mint 11 Main edition.

Thanks in advance.

Don't tether much but bought premium just to show support :-)

+Koushik Dutta awesome app running on droid razr but i'm getting super slow speeds despite being able to run at 27 down on the phone itself in my 4g area. any idea why it's so slow?

+Koushik Dutta i see resources are on git, i wondered if you plan on OS rest of the app, because i also see its free install from market. Most importantly carrier's such as At&t are starting a war on their grandfathered unlimited data users claiming they are tethering even when they are not so that they may break contract and move them to tiered and tethering plans. Assuming you have made it undetectable than i would be interested in replacing the stock tethering in AOSP built roms with your app. Not sure if this is something you thought of or are interested in. Just curious as to you stance and plans for your code. edit I c that after trial its an in app purchase ... I still would be interested in bundling this , how ever it obviously changes the approach

Dying to try this! In b4 pulled from market.

Awesome, thanks a lot. Keep up the great work!!!

+Koushik Dutta Been a fan of your stuff for so long now and just saw several articles floating around praising this app already. Downloading now!

Worked great on win 7 and linux mint 12 (had to install openssl sec libs) all worked great!

The app works great now. I was having trouble with it when it was still in Alpha on a MacBook Air with OSX 10.7.2 along with GN at 4.0.2. Thanks for making so many improvements to it so quickly.

Hi Kaushik. You are Inspiring. What have You studied ?

+Razo Marco +Koushik Dutta GALAXY NEXUS: Same issue as Razo, but more info for Koushik. I downloaded PC install from "?" button in your app, I could NOT see the ClockwordMod on the phone folder with PC (USB-MTP) connectivity. But, using FileManager (free app) I so see the ClockwordMod/Teather folders and the MSI's. Looks like your app created the folder in the "system" vs "user" (mnt/sdcard) area on the GNEX (excuse my ignorance on android programming terminology & Google+...)
MY FIX: used FileManager (on G-Nex) to copy your TEATHER folder into Downloads folder; it was then visible to PC; installed the MSI (alrady had phone driver installed). Only other glitch, was that MSI did not add Teather to All Program's menu (W7/64): I had to a shortcut to the exe myself. It does work. Rates are real variable, but this is an issue waiting for resolution for this phone. Understood, that you can not accommodate every phone's quarks every time! Great work! :)

+Koushik Dutta What versions of Mac OS X are supported? I have 10.5.8 and it doesn't seem to be supported. do I have to upgrade to 10.6?

+Koushik Dutta I set it up and it works like a champ, but Sprints "4G" network refuses the connection. Any ideas why that is? Did I set it up wrong or do I need to do something different for a rooted phone? *Edit* Figured it out, needed to reboot the phone after it connected with 3G and now wimax is running strong.

+Koushik Dutta I have found a problem. After using Tether my wifi will not re-enable. The solution is to reboot the computer. I have tried this twice and have gotten the same results.

1. Wifi is on.
2. Open web browser and test connection. Confirm it works.
3. Plug in phone.
4. Turn off wifi.
5. Start Tether on the computer and press start, wait for app to say it is connected.
6. Go back to web browser and test the internet connection over the tether. Confirms it works.
7. Go back to Tether on the computer and press stop. Then quit the application.
8. Unplug the phone.
9. Turn wifi back on.
10. Back in the web browser to test the internet connection. Connections fails.
11. Open iTunes to test a online radio stream. Fails to connect.
12. Reboot the computer.
13. Connect to wifi.
14. Open web browser. Internet works.

I am doing this on a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.2 coupled with a Galaxy Nexus (rooted) with 4.0.2. I download the Tether app from your link in this post for the computer and from the Android Market for the phone.

Hey Koshik since ur a dev can i ask sumthng coz ur a pro in dat field. i wanna buy galaxy s bt recently price of optimus 2x has been reducd considerebly, so im planning to buy o2x since its dualcore 8mp n blah-blah in short more advncd than galxy s n at almost same price. So suggest me whether i shud buy it or not coz i hav herd many -ive coments abt d fone like-build quality nt gr8, sh*tty software, reboot prob, more faulty fones bt i also herd sum ppl sayin its a beast in terms of hardware n lg nt optimising its tru power. So basically im asking u wat to do? Im middle of a dilemma n nt wanna rush coz its my 1st droid (yeah im a bit late 4 d party heh heh) n one of my frnd told me wipe out all lg' sh*tware n install custom rom. So will it run smoothly w/o glicthes n lag n will it b able to compete wid d likes of S2 n is it worth buying? I'll b thnkful 4m bottom of my heart n thnx in adv 4 ur time n reading.

Hi +Koushik Dutta I had asked this over Twitter "Hey Koushik, A small question. With Android 4.0 on ROM Manager. I dont see the option of Galaxy I9100 to flash CWM. If I select I9000, it messes up CWM"

I get a Force Close when I click the "enable USB debugging" screen 100% of the time. LG Optimus V

slower than the android tetherer(i'm sure i said that wrong, but you get the picture) on nexus one. i'm guessing this one hides the traffic from att with a vpn or encryption, and that's what's adding the slowness. if so, i don't mind at all

am i thinking right?

+Gary Pasler +Razo Marco We discovered this bug last night. "New" files do not show up via MTP right away. This is a bug with the MTP implementation on ICS+. I have experienced this on both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S. I'm sure we'll fix the problem in CM ;)

+Eli Waite Thanks for the bug report. You quit Tether right? Ie, there is no running Tether icon in the dock? If so, can you go to a console and type "ps aux" and get me the output from that?

+Steve Moody Yeesh, that sounds like a bug in Android... try going to it manually.

From launcher -> Settings -> Applications -> Debugging

Is that newer than the test download?

I have been using it for a couple of days, and I have to say it kinda confirmed what I already thought. I'm way over my 5GB cap on t-mobile and so I am throttled to hell and back...

However I had noticed that when I first connect each day (using Android wifi tether), I get a good connection. But as the day goes on, I get more and more "issues", ranging from even more throttling (down to 1kb/s from 5 or 6kb/s) or even just complete failure to connect. I even lose my APN connection sometimes and can't get it back for 10-15 minutes.

Now that I'm using your USB tether, I'm of course still throttled down to 5 kb/s (very slow) but the connection is MUCH more reliable. Fewer connection failures and loss of APN connection..

Tells me that T-Mobile doesn't just block tethered connections when they detect them - they just throttle them even more.

Thank you for the great app!

I would love to try it, if it means saving the battery life. I loose about 10% of battery life in my 1hr commute while using wifi tether.

Good morning (typical programmer) & THANKS again!

You don't have to tell me about MTP issues. I just moved out of first device because of major MTP problems; marked as "in isolated devices" by Samsung. Samsung wanted my device back, so they sent me a brand new G-Nex; which SEEMS to be better. Just activated it today, so waiting for all "invisible" updates to complete & see if it still behaves. NO: device they shipped did not seem to have any newer updates - was hoping for updated baseband code. :(

Why has no one commented on the best img ever included in this post? hahaha - "unlimited data" smh lol

+Chris Gustafson Everything looks fine in your log. Can you get me a list of your network adapters? Do you have a firewall (other than windows firewall) or antivirus in use?

+Koushik Dutta Is there any way you can include a .deb file on your site for Ubuntu? I tried installing the .tgz and got absolutely nowhere.

+Anthony Chastain That .tgz is basically a blob you can extract, build, and run.. Should work pretty easily I have no idea how to build a .deb unfortunately. I'll try to track down someone that is familiar with doing Linux releases.

+Koushik Dutta I'm not super familiar with the command line yet, this is my first distro. If you could give me the commands I'd greatly appreciate it.

+Anthony Chastain What distro?

Try this:
Download tether-linux.tgz
Go into a console, and into the directory with the file.

tar xzvf tether-linux.tgz
cd Tether
sudo linux/run.sh

That will give you further instructions.

+Koushik Dutta Xubuntu 11.10...

Ran those commands, followed the instructions, this is what I got.

+Koushik Dutta On one of my Mac's, running 10.6.8, connecting to a Droid Incredible, starting Tether on the Mac closes the window immediately. Message in the console log is: "([0x0-0x2f12f1].com.koushikdutta.Tether[27073]) Exited abnormally: Broken pipe"

+Koushik Dutta, nope it times out every time. PC is green, phone is blue.

Sounds like a great app but getting the following error...
Error: connect ECONNREFUSED code:'ECONNREFUSED' errno";ECONNREFUSED' syscall: 'connect' Thether connection closed

Posting comments for problems seems difficult, but here goes. I have installed the Samsung Drivers for my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I do have PDANet installed on my PC, but i figured I would give this a go. I do have my phone rooted (not that it matters), but this proves that the ADB drivers are installed correctly. I have tried to get mine connected numerous times and it stops at this step every time:

'1': 'Starting: Intent { cmp=com.koushikdutta.tether/.TetherActivity }\r\r\nWarning: Activity not started, its current task has been brought to the front\r\r\n',
'2': '' }
{}
On the left the icon is dark blue and says - "Connected to phone. Waiting for tether connection."

I have re-installed the app on both the phone and the PC, and also re-installed the PC drivers for the phone.

+Koushik Dutta I'm running a Macbook pro with 10.6.8 and a Droid 3 (rooted) and when I start tether on the computer I get the following errors
Unloading existing tun/tap kexts.
Testing net.tunnelblick.tun
Testing net.tunnelblick.tap
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tun
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tap
Done unloading tun/tap kexts.
Loading /tmp/tun.kext.
Error loading /tmp/tun.kext

any thoughts?

+Koushik Dutta I had pdanet but installed (using the script). I also deleted the en2 adapter it uses in system prefs and no change.

+Sam Abuelsamid That might be it. Try this:

sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB
sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt
sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp

That may unload them and make tether work.

Let's have some redeem codes over the next few days or email me move2ri@gmail.com

How about Android phone to Android tablet tether? Have an LG G2x and an HP Touchpad?

+Koushik Dutta I can confirm that removing PDAnet from a Mac will solve many connection issues. I was getting connection sometimes and sometimes I wasn't. Sometimes connection would drop after about 5 min. After uninstalling PDAnet completely from both the Galaxy Nexus and the Mac I haven't had any troubles. Way to go Koush! You never cease to amaze us. Probably the best dev in the biz.. You gonna post more codes? I purchased twice for my 2 accounts and now my GF wants a go at it.

Once I uninstalled PDANet it works great. Thanks for getting back to me. Love the application, it is not as clean looking as PDANet just yet, but I love your work so I'm using this over PDANet. :-)

Already went Premium

+Stacy Bruce There are gonna be 30 more codes given out by droid life, android central, and android police.

+Travis Patton Which part do you want me to clean up? The Windows/Mac UI or the Android part?

+Travis Patton +Koushik Dutta Clean up shlean up. It works beautifully! Why do you want some fancy ass stuff that you wont see? You attention is going to be on your computer anyway.. I dig it

+Koushik Dutta, nope, once that thing started having notifications telling me to subscribe every 45 seconds I uninstalled it. Lol

The Windows UI for sure, the Tether application on Android looks ok.

Things to change on the Windows UI - I'm picky so don't take this as I am being harsh as I know you wanted to get functionality

1. Fix the application icon from the stock Visual Studio application icon -- My suggestion would be to use the icon from the Market page (really like that one). Use this same icon for the taskbar because when you minimize tether the icon isn't great to look at.

2. As a developer myself I don't care that the output log has all sorts of diag messages outputting, but someone like my Dad who is interested in your app for his GN is going to freak out by seeing all of those messages roll by on the screen. Maybe move the log output to an "Advanced" view. When viewing the standard view you only see the tether icon and maybe a few key diag messages like, "Connected to phone, starting, stopping, awaiting connection to internet". Have those messages to the right of the tether icon with something like a drag strip christmas tree where the lights tick off as things happen.

Android UI:
One thing that seems to be missing from the Android version is whether or not I received premium after I purchased it. I bought and paid for it, but there isn't any indication that I have it. When I click the "..." in the right corner it just has the buy menu and nothing indicating that I have the premium version.
Jeff A

Koushik, that was it... Firewall disabled and its up and running thanks!!!
Great WORK!

+Travis Patton Thanks for the feedback. I skimped aesthetics on the PC app (as I have to do it once for each platform) and went for functionality and a quick release. :) I plan to iterate on those.

I will move that stuff into a more advanced tab soon. But for now, it makes it really easy to get feedback and technical info from non-technical users.

Android Menu: good point. I need to fix that.

+Koushik Dutta I know, the program was uninstalled and I removed the program files. So it's completely gone. It's definitely something with my computer, still looking though.

Doesn't seem to want to work with my Samsung Charge. Downloaded the generic Samsung drivers from your page (no device-specific ones were available off the Samsung support site), but doesn't seem to want to hook up (and that's when the app doesn't flat-out crash on my device).

Tried restarting both the PC and the phone. No dice.

Not looking good.

+Thomas Jones Can you send me a log? May try to get the specific phone drivers for the charge via the driver website I have linked on the market?

+Koushik Dutta , this works awesome(ly?) on my wifes Motorola Charm. I'm stuck for a few more weeks yet on my good ol' G1. Unfortunately, it keeps dying on the G1. It'll work great for 1 minute, or maybe 5, but then it disconnects. It appears that for some reason, adb reports the device suddenly offline. The phone says that its running, and that I should start the windows app, and the windows app just keeps trying to reconnect. If I disconnect the USB, and then re-plug...it all works again, for another few minutes.

any ideas ?

+Brian J. Ackermann Wowza, what version of Android on teh G1? I know that older devices have buggy adb forward support (I had to do a lot of hacking to work around this).

I wonder if saying "Go get it before it gets pulled off the Market by Verizon Wireless (and other such crony carriers)!", while mentioning Verizon in this post, will get it noticed faster, and thus will get it pulled from the market faster.

+Leo Topol I was being facetious :) I think that verizon wireless page is just for a specific retail branch, so no harm. not that their social media people have much sway in terms of getting apps pulled.

+Koushik Dutta , yeah, don't I know it. Just a few more weeks and hopefully, I'll be moving to a Galaxy Nexus, or, an S2 if Tmo doesn't decide to get on board. Anyhow, I'm on Eclair (SuperE). I've got the tethering that's build into the ROM, but wouldn't mind having some other options available too...

looks awesome. how does it work? I saw where you said it works through a proxy, does this hide the change in TTL that's supposedly sending red flags to the carriers (AT&T, Verizon) for unauthorized tethering? if not in which way does it hide tethering? I'll have more luck buying it than grabbing the redeem code ;) THANKS!

Thanks for getting back to me Koushik. What language did you write the Windows part in?

+Koushik Dutta, Uninstalled, reinstalled, tried different device. Nothing works on this PC. Works fine on my other WIndows PC. No clue what to do. :P

I'm curious about the coupon method you used on this app +Koushik Dutta. Is it publicly available or was it developed in-house?

+Ricardo Amaral It's developed in house, called ClockworkModBilling. The Android client is open source, the server is not. It also has paypal and google web checkout available as payment sources.

I've been talking with other developers letting them use it. The coupon stuff is super useful.

+Koushik Dutta, I don't have any firewalls other than Windows, so it's probably not that. I'll try uninstalling/reinstalling the Samsung drivers, and Tether again.

Well I don't think I'm gonna be able to get this to work on this PC. Not really a big deal though, it's a Desktop and I have WiFi tether if I need it.

Anyway, is there anyway you can give me some codes that I can give away to fans of my page? http://on.fb.me/lkxE8F

how do i get this to work on my kindle fire?, i wanna be able to tether my kindle fire off my phone when im not near wifi? i got the app, any help would be greatly appreciated!
SHANE M

Ok, ty for the quick reply. U truly do rock ty for everything!

+Koushik Dutta I sent you a direct message here on G+ with the information you asked for. You might want to check your incoming stream for it.

Will this tether work on my ASUS tablet? Thanks Koush this works great on my laptop, I will be paying and supporting your work so thank you. It would be really helpful if I could use this with my tablet as well. Thanks.

+Joe Welker That happens if you have certain other virutal adapters installed, or if you have a firewall like avast or others running. Sound like anything you may have?

So whats the benefit to tethering or just creating a wifi hotspot and hooking my comp that way?

+A Diamond Yeah, ping (icmp) does not work. However, UDP and TCP should work. UDP is what provides DNS lookups. TCP is what provides web page downloads. What operating system are you on? Mind restarting your browser?

HTC EVO loves this App. Easy to load on the Computer and Phone. Up and running, speed seems almost the same as my wireless connection. Also, I took a call on phone while tethering and it still worked which PdaNet couldn't do. And this app works while my phone is in wifi mode which Pdanet also didn't like. I'll continue to test but so far I've been really impressed.

I would love for this to be implemented into the webtop/lapdocks for the various motorola devices. allowing for a workaround for the required tethering plan without getting detected.

Great app for people that need it... Works flawlessly on my HTC Vision ICS rom + Windows 7 ultimate...

I bought the app but I didn't get a code or anything

Uninstalled pdanet and virtual box, turned off firewall and anti virus but still getting same connection error

+Koushik Dutta got Tether running on Ubuntu tonight. Very impressed. Thanks for all you work. Also wanted to thank you for the inspiration. Since using ClockworkMod and flashing numerous ROMS, learning some of the basic aspects of Android, I've started to delve into app development. Your products and especially your involvement with the user community have been a great help in my development.

Any chance you might make an option for wireless tether? I usually only tether my tablet.

Anymore redeem codes? I'd like to try this out with my wife's tablet pc.

+A Diamond That's just a UI bug regarding the purchase. I'll fix that soon.

Thanks for the list of suggestions! I have some already in the works!

Appears to be removed from sprint - any way to get the unfettered version after its been removed from my carrier's market?

Hmm, didnt work..I had good results! 9.24 down and 5.38 up! Though it is not as fast as the numbers indicate..great work Koush!

No worky on VZW DroidX (rooted not ROMed) with MacOS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

Tether.app cannot cannot connect to phone. USB debugging is on, charge only mode, phone connect directly via USB - no USB hub, wi-fi off.

+stacy hills Your computer can't see your phone. Is usb debugging enabled on your phone?

You can usually find usb debugging in: Settings -> Applications -> Development.

Or under Settings -> Developer Options

+Koushik Dutta
USB degubbing: checked
USB connection: Charge Only

My Mac "sees" (reported by HardwareGrowler) the phone when I plug it in.

Not sure if late to the party but would you happen to have any redeem codes left?

+Chris Gustafson Read the note in the tether app about "Tethering is slow". That may help. I can get 20Mbps if I am tethered via wifi on my phone (i use that to test the max speed).

+Koushik Dutta, I did, but I'm connected directly to my PC so it shouldn't be a problem. When I click on the connection info it says "10 Mbps". On custom ROMs with built in tethering, the connection speed is usually around 425Mbps.

It's finally working for me - I had PDANet installed, and after reading through the comments here I uninstalled it and updated Tether - that did the trick! Great app, just bought premium.

Works for me with my macbook pro running 10.7.2, but after turning it off, DNS is hosed over the normal wifi connection on my macbook until I reboot :-/

And I had to go and buy EasyTether back two summers ago...

+Koushik Dutta , does the app really need all those permissions? (phone state/identity, use auth credentials, market billing, discover known accounts) Thanks. Seems like a very cool app otherwise.

+Paul Clarke Yep, those are all used for in app billing. Mostly for paypal purchases, because lots of countries can't pay via the market.

Couldn't wait, bought it, works great with my new Galaxy Nexus. 20 Mbps down on a tether is SWEET. and 68ms ping is really not bad considering what all is involved.

+A Diamond I'm not sure what would cause it to reinstall if you moved the folder. I am using the standard visal studio deployment project to create those shortcuts, etc.

Tether only creates one interface, it removes all previous interfaces on reinstall. The network name just never gets reset to the lowest available number (unless you are on Windows 7). You can just rename it to whatever you want anyways.
Adam S

ATTENTION: This app is incompatible with your AT&T Motorola MB860.
Adam S

Nevermind. Issue resolved on installation. Going to try it out when I get to a place without internet.

Is there any way to get the Tether connection to show up in the Linux network manager? Various apps that I have are not seeing the Tether connection as an internet connection and will not launch. I did not see anything about this listed in the previous comments.
Adam S

The app does work slow and cuts out every half hour or so forcing me to close and reopen the programs.

Hey +Koushik Dutta, I have purchased the tether app and had it running for a while on my Macbook Air. I am using a Galaxy Nexus and I am having difficulties getting it to work again. The output log reads like this:
Unloading existing tun/tap kexts.
Testing net.tunnelblick.tun
Testing net.tunnelblick.tap
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tun
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tap
Done unloading tun/tap kexts.
Loading /tmp/tun.kext.
Error loading /tmp/tun.kext

Any Ideas? Thanks man

+Koushik Dutta I restarted both the CPU and the GNex and the error persisted. Also toggled wifi on the MBA if that makes a difference. And I hate to say it but where would I clear /tmp/tun.kext.? Def a newbie. Might be the problem right there :-D

+Stacy Bruce Open a console and type:
sudo rm -rf /tmp/tun.kext

Let me know if that works. What version of OSX are you on? Do you have TunnelBlick, EasyTether, PDANet installed?

+Koushik Dutta I uninstalled PDANet the first time I had issues and that resolved the problem for a while. I am running OSX 10.7.2. I will try the terminal command and see whats happens

+Koushik Dutta Yes sir, did as you recommended and I got the same output:

Unloading existing tun/tap kexts.
Testing net.tunnelblick.tun
Testing net.tunnelblick.tap
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tun
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tap
Done unloading tun/tap kexts.
Loading /tmp/tun.kext.
Error loading /tmp/tun.kext

+Koushik Dutta No ideas on the persistant log output? The one posted just above? Sorry, man. You got me hooked when it was working :-D

+Stacy Bruce Did you have any log output when you deleted that directory? Can you try maybe deleting the application and reinstalling?

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the call to net.createServer in tuntap.js should really have the following change:

- if (!c) {
+ if (!c || (c.destinationString !== socket.remoteAddress && c.sourceString !== socket.remoteAddress)) {

Otherwise, it looks like to me that the only thing you're checking on packets that come in on port 50001 is the port on the other end of the connection, and there are only 2^16 ports... I don't like those odds, by which I mean I'm sure some enterprising hackers would like those odds.

+Steven Collins The listener for port 50001 is only listening on the tun device, which is a virtual adapter. So, the source address is trusted.

I installed it from the browser on my (AT&T) android, because it wasn't showing up in the market on my phone. And indeed, despite that i've installed it, it still doesn't show up. Is that AT&T filtering my phone?

Of course, connecting it via the wire and updating the app that way just works fine, i confirm it now works on my android. slow on 3G but a great emergency solution. Bit of work to install (linux) with potential dependency nightmare, so one needs to be prepared!

Koush, works great on my hackintosh on both OS's. Great replacement for my useless wireless card in OSX. Gave great feedback and i'll def pay the $4.99 to help support. I'll let you know if i start running into any issues in the future on OSX or Win7. Thanks for all your hard work for the android community!

I had Tether working on my MAC back at the beginning of January before it was on the Market and now I have tried multiple times reinstalling and I cannot get it to work. Please help! I have my phone set to "charge only mode" and the debugging is enabled on my phone. However, ever since I started this the first week of January, my phone has not given me the choice to "charge only" or not, but as far as I can tell, that is what it is set at. I have the Thunderbolt HTC and here is the log:

No 14 day trial even though I never installed before. pls advise

Tried this again after the latest update. It seems to be very slow. Is there still a free trial period? I am not sure I want to pay if the speed ends up being the same as it is now. Let me know if I am missing something. Everything is set up and connected. Running Atrix 4G on Windows 7
Adam S

Or at least if I have some recourse after purchase if I am not satisfied. I will be happy to pay if so. Thanks!

First, thanks and I will be buying the full version as soon as I can get it to work. I am trying to get Tether up and running on my Thunderbolt but ran into error, here is the log:

Mine connects, I only get like a few mbps down and less up and then it just freezes up.

Hey there! I wanted to congratulate and thank you for the work you have done on this. Got it up and running on Ubuntu 11.10 64bit, but the speeds are very spotty. Have tried setting my phone to use either my local Wifi (45/25 mb/s) or 3G (~2/1 mb/s) but can't seem to get any speed out of it at all. It seems like it is having trouble keeping a consistent connection. (I look forward to ICMP getting implemented.) Watching speed test appear to pause briefly prior to continuing again. I have seen spikes up to 7 mb/s while using my local Wifi, but that is rare. I will continue playing with it, and will try it out in Windows 7 as well. Keep up the good work, and let me know if I can provide any information that might help you out.

Finally got it to work. I had to uninstall Hamachi (sad face) in order to get it to work. Simply disabling the hamachi adapter didn't work as others had recommended.

+1 for a Reverse Tether app to let me use my PC's connection on my phone. I'd happily shoot another $5.99 towards the +Koushik Dutta retirement fund.

Koushik, Can you suggest how we can uninstall the app from MacbookAir (2011, 10.7) as well?

Installed easily on Modded Evo 4G (MazWoz-EVO ICS) and Windows 7. First attempt to connect resulted in:

code: 'ECONNREFUSED',
errno: 'ECONNREFUSED',

Disabling firewall had no effect. Stopped and restarted laptop app resulted in a connection. After closing down both mobile and laptop apps and restarting tether connection was successful every time. Have only used app a short while, but appears to work fine since original snafu. Hopefully Sprint won't foul up the good times!

Downloaded app and had it up and running in about 15 mins. Windows Vista / Stock Verizon GNex.
I know OMG Vista! Hey never had any trouble with it. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it
Your The Man!!! Thanks!

I have tried every suggestion here and it still doesn't work. It works on my phone just fine but my windows 7-64 system rejects it and won't make a connection.

I keep getting:
checking arguments...
exit unexpected at this time.

Hi I installed the program successfully however when I open my browser it reads:

per the terms and conditions of service, tethering/mobile hotspot if not currently supported.

Is there a way around it?

It said my Samsung galaxy skyrocket is not compatible? Why?

+Koushik Dutta Hi, Koushik. First I wanna say your app is brilliant, thanks a lot! I have a question on using Tether on my linux-mint machine & Samsung Galaxy S2 with ATT.

I can use Tether normally, which means I get slower connection and the amount of usage can be seen from my data plan, and this connection is not shown in network manager notification area. However, there comes another new network "Mobile Broadband", which appears in notification area, after installing Tether. And this connection is much faster but doesn't seem to use my data package at all.

I am actually little worried about this Broadband thing, not sure if it is safe to use or ATT will come back and bite me on the ass in due time.

I will really appreciate any suggestion on this.

Thanks a lot!

[SOLVED] Hurray! :-)
+Koushik Dutta I don't know if this was already pointed out, but the error was due to a permission problem, even though running the Tether app on a Mac would pop up a window asking for the root password. I solved it by running it from the command line:

[EDIT]
No need to run with the sudo. Just use the absolute path and the popup window asking for the root password will work.
$> /Applications/Tether.app/Contents/MacOS$ sudo ./Tether

$> /Applications/Tether.app/Contents/MacOS/Tether

Thanks again for this great app!

+Koushik Dutta I wanted to know does tethering work with XP & Ice Cream Sandwich. A friend of mine has Sony Tipo & he is experiencing problem & his PC is really old so can't upgrade to win7 or vista. So would XP SP3 solve the problem? Thanks

koushik i downloaded the windows version i have windows 7 home 64 bit and i get an errror saying the windows installer service cannot be accessed. and i also had another question, wil this work with windows 8?

+Koushik Dutta  I seem to be having an issue. I don't think i've installed anything recently that could have casued this. I remember when I first ran the tether application on my mac it worked perfectly fine.

This is as far as it gets:
Unloading existing tun/tap kexts.
Testing net.tunnelblick.tun
Testing net.tunnelblick.tap
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tun
Testing com.viscosityvpn.Viscosity.tap
Done unloading tun/tap kexts.
Loading /tmp/tun.kext.
Error loading /tmp/tun.kext

And then stops there ^

I tried like you posted earlier:
sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB
sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt
sudo kextunload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp

However, i just get an error in terminal saying: "Can't create org.virtualbox.kext.xxx" (where 'xxx' is the VBox commands). When I do kextstat i do see those there.

Those two times when it did work, i still had VirtualBox installed and I havent updated VirutalBox or anything since then. So perhaps virtualbox isn't interfering? I wouldn't know haha you're the awesome developer who has brought us this wonderful application!

I've tried downloading and re-downloading, restarting and still no ability to start the application! I'm on Mac OSX 10.7.5 and using a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SIII. I do have USB debugging enabled and on the application I have tethering on and it says USB tether is running.

i have installed this on smamsung proclaim SCH-S720C and it works however on my pc running win xp i get an error report : tetherwindows has encountered problem the report error signature is as follows eventtype:clr20r3  p1:tetherwindows.exe  p2: 1.0.0.0 p3: 513bf086 p4: mscorlib  p5: 2.0.0.0  p6: 471ebc5b  p7: 1295  p8: 14  p9 system.missingmethodexception .....  now if i dont close the send report window the program stays open and works but if i click exit report or dont send it closes the program anybody know why

Holy %&^$ your a computer god....
