Taiko (太鼓) is the Japanese word for large drum. The word also describes the music form. Taiko originates in Japan but is now played in other parts of the world such as Asia, America, Europe och Australia.

Taiko began as an art form with Daihachi Oguchi [1924-2008], who founded the Osuwa Taiko in 1953. Another pioneering group was Yushima Tenjin Sukeroku Daiko, which was founded in the 1960s, and this group laid the foundation for what we today call kumi-daiko. Kumi-daiko has it's traditional roots in Gagaku (imperial court music from the 7th century), Kabuki dance drama, Noh drama and Japanese festival drumming.

Taiko has not only spread geographically over the years, but has expanded artistically as well, from traditional festival drumming, to creating new styles of taiko and collaboration with other musical forms.

The rhythms from Japanese drums vibrate through body, spirit and mind. In conjunction with esthetically pleasing choreography, the music style enthralls and spreads joy for both players and audience.

Taiko Shin Kai is a non-profit organization that wish to encourage and spread taiko, Japanese drumming, in Sweden. Taiko Shin Kai offers taiko courses and workshops in Stockholm and Uppsala for children and adults.

Taiko Shin Kai is based in Sweden.

We had two fantastic days with Isabel Romeo Biedma from Isabel Romeo Taiko, who lead 4 wonderful workshops:
* "Kihon Is Roots": no matter how long we have been playing, we always need to go back to the basics.
* "Moving from the Core": to get connected with our body and its core.

* "Bright Playing": how we can use our whole body to express what we play
During this amazing event, we had a joint performance together with Isabel Romeo Biedma at Culture Night in Uppsala on September 9th.

We wish to thank our special guest Isabel Romeo Biedma, and we also wish to thank the organizers of Culture Night in Uppsala for including our performance in the program and Studiefrämjandet for hosting the workshops.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in these amazing workshops! And an equal big thank you to everyone who contributed to this event and made all this possible!

Photos from the workshops will be published in a slideshow and a short video (of our joint performance) from our weekend event with Isabel Romeo Biedma will also be published, once we have the material ready.
