Interesting experience with the Post Office today. I called because of a problem with our lock - we didn't do it, but it doesn't work and we can't get our mail (in our neighborhood). I was told we would have to pay $40 to get it fixed. When I asked why I had to pay for this, I was told that we owned the box so we had to repair it, just like if we owned the mailbox on our own property. But, we don't own it and it's not on our property. According to law (http://goo.gl/ftUKU
), once a post box is put into use it becomes the property of the federal government. Ironically it's a federal crime for me to "repair" or tamper with the lock myself. But, they refuse to take care of their own equipment on public property. Anyone still confused about why the founding fathers argued for limited govt? And this is just a post box.
