A Finnish electric car - excellent!
Finnish electric supercar turns heads in Monaco

"The Toroidion battery-powered car boasts a 1,341 horsepower engine, but at the moment is only a concept car and apparently still needs to undergo road testing.

The name of the vehicle, 1MW, stands for one megawatt, and its power is purported to rival the Swedish Koenigsegg One supercar. Unlike the Koenigsegg, though, the 1MW is powered only by electricity.

While details about specifications of the engine and battery technologies remain scant, the automotive press world took notice of the car at its unveiling in Monaco on Thursday..."

Congratulations are in order to the Google Lollipop Calendar team.

This is the team that thought that it was a good idea to introduce the "google calendar week" - that special five-day week that starts at random points in the old-fashioned 7-day calendar.

Because that is the kind of bold experimentation we want for our calendars. Look at Julius Caesar - with the introduction of the julian calendar he really put his stamp on history, and guaranteed that his name still lives on, two thousand years later.

The Lollipop Calendar team dreamed big, and wanted to play in the same league.  Bold move, team! Stupid, but bold.

But then the drugs wore off, and finally somebody seems to have realized that the whole point of a calendaring application is actually to be useful in a world where you interact with all those odd old-fashioned people who still think that a week has a boring seven days.

Guys, you looked immensely stupid there for a while. But today I got a calendar update, and the weeks are seven days again, and pinch-to-zoom works again.

I congratulate you on getting off the bad drugs, and not looking quite as f*cking stupid as you did there for several months.

This essay, about the difference between usability testing and expert review, was published long ago in UPA Voice. When UXPA purged old content in their redesign, a Bentley instructor who uses the piece in class asked for a copy. The ideas hold, even 11 years later.

How Helsinki sparked a restaurant revolution

"Gavin Haines visits an abandoned abattoir in Helsinki, which is changing the concept of eating out for millions of diners.

An arctic breeze blasts down the streets of Helsinki. Snow tries to fall. Once again, the Finnish capital is succumbing to winter. Fortunately for me I’m holed up in a distillery, warming my cockles with liberal measures of liquor – gin, whisky and applejack – which are being free-poured by an excitable Kai Kilpinen.

Looking dapper in his tweed jacket, Kai has every reason to be excited. Over the summer he and his pals, Mikko Mykkänen and Seámus Holohan, made history by bringing the ancient art of distilling back to Helsinki after an absence of nearly 100 years.

This hiatus is a legacy of prohibition, which was enforced when Finland became independent from Russia.

“Between 1919 and 1932 we had prohibition,” explains Kai. “People were only allowed alcohol for medical purposes – so there were a lot of sick people...”
