That's an interesting observation. I wonder how you can determine if something is a mistake if you don't already understand at least some of the patterns?

In which case, having the mistakes should not be that big an issue, as you can correct them.
AFAIK, most ancient texts are purely administrative bookkeeping (that's why script usually is invented at first), so maybe it's a matter of "adding up" symbols?
