Fantastic vegan Mexican food -- and it's organic! If only I could pay in bitcoin, i'd be in heaven...

It's rare to find a vegan restaurant that non-vegans (and even non-vegetarians) truly enjoy. I've mostly been here with my meat-loving friends, and they have left amazed at how great vegan Mexican food can actually be! I highly recommend the guacamole and sangria. If you're lucky, a local mariachi band will come strolling through at some point during your dinner (they tend to frequent this spot). One precaution: Be careful if you have nut allergies, because many menu items are made with cashews.

So far, Gracias Madre is kind of the go-to vegan place in San Francisco. It's pretty good, everyone knows about it, and it's possible to get in. I've been a few times, and generally really like it. The vibe is pretty laid back, even when there's a wait (I went down the street to Dr. Teeth and got a drink, came back too late, and they had a table ready for us even though we missed our call). The shared tables make it easy to get into conversation with someone nearby. The first time I ate here I ordered the butternut squash quesadilla, and found it to be disappointingly bland. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised because butternut squash anything is usually pretty bland, but still. I feel like Tacolicious would have made sure it was tasty. Other times, I've ordered the special. I definitely recommend that! The place doesn't have a full bar so they do soju drinks. They're pretty good -- I usually get the ginger one.

This organic vegan Mexican restaurant will please plant eaters and delightfully surprise meat eaters. Their family-style seating arrangements gives a comfortable, homey feel for groups and family meals. I recommend anything with their eggplants and mushrooms because they prepare them so flawlessly, but take plantains whenever you can because their plantains often run out first. For dessert, you won't believe that their decadent flan and brownie are both made of beans.

Before writing this review I researched Gracias Madre's previous reviews, not only on this site, but on other review sites. I wanted to make sure my experience, on Saturday night, was not a unique experience and thus not warranting the following review. Gracias Madre's service appears to an issue over and over on many different review sites. I am giving the 1 star rating as they appear not to have acted on their service problem and continue to permit bad service to taint dinner's experience. On Saturday night I arrived with my girlfriend for an early dinner about 5 p.m. No issue getting seated but then the trouble starts once we are seated. It took the server a while to come over and greet us. From there is it is all down hill. It appears our server was more interested in gossiping and talking with other servers, the bartenders and the reservation desk attendant then spend time making sure are dining experience was a positive one. Our server did manage to take our order, the meal was delivered but she never came back to check on us. My girlfriend tired to ask the server a question, as the server was walking by, and was promptly told to wait a minute, server's index finger held up told my girlfriend, while the server finished her conversation with another server. We resorted to asking other servers and wait staff for assistance. We asked the other wait staff to corral our server and send her to our table so we could order dessert, a Mexican coffee and the check (we figured we better order everything as we may not see the server again). The Mexican coffee appeared 10 minutes later, the dessert never showed nor did the check. The coffee was warm, not hot, and our server could be seen busy still talking with other staff. We saw the manager walking by and expressed our concerns. She was able to get us the check the coffee was deducted. We cancelled the dessert. The manager told us she would talk to the server (a blonde young woman - never got her name) and see if she could sort out the cause for such bad service. As for the food the enchilada was good and had some great flavor. The salad with the figs was also very good. The tacos were bland and uninspiring, the coffee was the equivalent of warm dish water and the dessert, well it could not find its way to our table (much like our server). The check was $54.65 - I had $55.00 cash in my pocket and left that. I was a server years ago and did not like leaving a tip but in this case this it was appropriate. Until Gracias Madre handles their service issue I am not suggesting people dine there. From the previous reviews Gracias Madre should be aware of the service issues but have not solved or apparently addressed the problem. Save yourself some grief and eat elsewhere. It could be Gracias Madre's best days are behind them and they have started a downward spiral.

This place was muy delicioso! Located right in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco, it offers amazing local fare and color with a vegan twist. The guacamole and homemade tortillas were delicious. The mole enchilladas and black beans were just the right amount of spice. The special of the evening was a Veggie Quesadilla with Cashew Creama with a spicy guacamole salsa. Although, I was full from all the tasty food they also offered an array of vegan desserts. I recommend coming to try this place out.

Vegas Mexican food is like an oxymoron! But luckily it works so well. The guac is amazing and the posole is to die for.

I love this place! So many tasty vegetarian options. I'd give it 5 stars but I think its a little pricy for the portion size of almost all of their dishes. There normally is a long wait so make sure to get their early to put your name on the list. there a bunch of bars closeby if there is a long wait. Definitely try this place if you love Mexican food and vegetarian dishes.
