Regarding the recent Travel bans, Terrorism and Refugees:

My grandfather's got a knock on the door when he was 12 years old. The Turkish soldiers told them they took his father and his 5 Uncles a couple of miles out if town, poured gas on them and burned them. Years before his older brother was in the army and he watched a Christian beaten to death by three Muslim soldiers in a public square with many witnesses. Years after these incidents they found out he was going to be drafted into the army and they decided he needed to escape.
My grandfather lived in Diyarbakır, Turkey a city of walls 20' high with only one way in or out which was through the main gate.
They hired a group if nomads to help him escape. The hid my him in the governor's stable for a week where they shaved his head and taught him to ride a donkey and act like one of them. When time came for him to leave and they opened the gates he recognized one of the guards as the man who years earlier had told him about his father. He thought "before me is my freedom and behind me is my family." When they got a few miles out of town the head of the nomads told him to write a letter to his mother and let her know he was okay. He realized then and there that there were good and bad in all peoples. There were the Muslims who killed his father and the ones who helped him escape and save his life.

I can't imagine the difficulty of deciding to leave his family or his mother's in supporting him. Yet that is the heart wrenching decision being made everyday by refugees. If only people could learn what my grandfather had learned all those years ago, that there are good and bad in all people. Instead we let our ignorances and fears feed our prejudices and unfortunately seem to have to learn those same lessons again.

Beetleblocks, finally a reason to get a 3D printer
Somehow I came across Beetleblocks , which is a "g raphical blocks-based programming environment for 3D design and fabrication.  Use code to control a beetle that can place 3D shapes and extrude its path as a tube. Then make a 3D print!" It makes building 3...

Day 14-15 - 30 Day Learning Challenge
Sometimes the best thing to learn is that  I am doing something stupid. So I spend the Thursday and Friday in a elasticsearch class.  I find elasticsearch very useful and Lucene very cool.  But really what I found most useful was the three really stupid thi...

Day 13 - 30 Day Learning Challenge - Debugging/Simulations Play
Not much to show today.  I spent a good deal of time working on some dice simulations/modeling. My goal was to think about how students might write a dice simulation in various languages and how one could facilitate understanding/learning about the underlyi...
