Any readers use melatonin? No longer use melatonin? Could use some entries for http://lesswrong.com/lw/1lt/case_study_melatonin/1vks - a list I'm using in the ROI section to estimate whether melatonin is worth experimenting with.

While I'm on the topic of sleep hygeine - F.Lux is a fantastic piece of software. It changes the white-point on my laptop display in the evening and night: http://stereopsis.com/flux/Jun 9, 2012
i'll take a quarter of a 3mg tablet (so 0.75mg, though if it was possible I'd probably want to take 0.25-0.5 mg, but thats harder to do with a pill cutter considering the lowest OTC dose is 3mg) 1-2 hours before I want to sleep. It helps, quite a bit, with keeping my sleep cycle from rotating too much. Also seems to cause more vivid dreaming. Found that it also helped with sleep quality.Jun 10, 2012

+Antoine Latter May be interesting for you to know that I'm currently experimenting with Redshift to see if the subjective effects really do affect sleep: http://www.gwern.net/Zeo#redshiftf.luxJun 10, 2012
Very effective for me at doses of 1mg. Within 30-60 min, I'm consistently hit by an urgent need for sleep. Unlike my natural sleepiness, melatonin sleepiness can't be staved off by interesting reading or conversation, and even focusing on brushing teeth becomes a challenge. It effectively counteracts caffeine and other alertness enhancers.
My dreams tend to be more vivid and remembered (which is otherwise rare for me). I haven't found any effective dose that allowed me to rouse effectively with less than 8 hours sleep; that's the main reason I use it only 2-4 times per month.Jun 14, 2012
