This Hangout archive has been my Saturday morning background noise.  Dewey, standards-based grading, Lortie's apprenticeship of observation --- wish I could have joined in!  I left a suggestion for a next discussion via Google Moderator.  Thanks +Raymond Johnson !

Thank you, Matt. Even though I really should make more time to have these discussions on a regular schedule, it's good to know that once they're on the net people can watch them at their convenience. I hope you can join in sometime!

Good to know...it's great to be able to record a hangout.  The capability seems to be only an add-on to Skype.

Old ISP (Qwest) and new ISP (Mediacom). Hello faster download speeds and cheaper rates.

+Lyz Lenz Do you currently use Qwest/Centurylink? I found out when I called them up to cancel that if you ask for 'retentions' they may indeed be able to give you a lower rate on your current bill. The two people I talked to a few months ago when trying to negotiate a new price didn't mention anything about a better (single service) price, so I assumed nothing could be done. The gal at retentions that I canceled with yesterday said those folks missed the boat. Oh well.

Small college tradition -- Coe v. Cornell basketball.

After the first basket by the home team, fans throw toilet paper on the court which earns them a technical foul. Check out the video footage from tonight's game.

I still like the Grinnell College basketball tradition, which is to continually heave shots from half court until either the game ends or players can no longer lift their arms, whichever comes first.

Hi Karl.  A question I have isn't directly related to your lesson plans, but instead to the process your district is using to align instruction with CCSS.  For example, when I read CCSS, I see an explicit list of math standards students should learn in 6th grade.  When I read CCSS, I see an explicit list of math standards students should learn in grades 9-12, however courses and grade levels at the high school level are not dictated.  One might come to the conclusion "Algebra 1" as we previously knew it is no longer.  It would be up to each district (or state?) to determine which standards students should be learning during the first high school credit bearing course (perhaps formerly known as "Algebra 1")....with Appendix A (http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_Mathematics_Appendix_A.pdf) serving as a conversation starter.  As a curriculum guy currently struggling through the process I'm anxious to learn more about how your district/building/state handling this shift.  Are you able to share any insights into the broader CCSS 9-12 standards to courses shift?
If you're a faithful reader, you know that I have some concerns with the Common Core State Standards. At the moment, however, I am tasked to teach an Algebra course that is aligned to those standards, so I'm trying to make it...

Sorry, meant to mention that our school is on the "traditional" pathway. PARCC also has frameworks for the "integrated" approach - Math I, II and III on that previous framework link.

I'm nervous about how many people in my Facebook stream I saw posting that "it's a free service" picture. Facebook is not free. Gmail is not free. We are not their customers. Advertisers are their customers. We are their product. That's not tinfoil hat, 1984 speak. It's the reality of their business model.

Comfy and warm "fireplace" in the winter. Gelato can be a fun treat in warmer weather months.
