Centennial season approaches!
Now that the 2014-15 season is over... San Francisco Opera will have its 100th anniversary in a few years; this is even mentioned in the summer, 2015 programs. Certainly the company is going to plan a very special season to c...

Lulu....mein ENGEL!!!!
I can't believe I forgot to post about this: West Edge Opera has a fantastic summer season starting in just a few weeks. I hear that one of the operas is well on its way to a sellout, in fact. Here are all of the performances...

Pretty but dumb web pages.
Dear Concert Presenters: PLEASE, oh pretty please with sugar on top, please provide your schedule on web page that works like paper, where at a glance an interested person can see the following for every one of your concerts:...

Want to see one of the great operatic epics?

A friend has a ticket for sale to the otherwise sold-out San Francisco Opera production of Berlioz's Les Troyens. It's a great production of a wonderful opera; I love it so much I am going for the third time.

Ticket details:

Wednesday, July 1
San Francisco Opera, Grove & Van Ness in SF

6 p.m curtain (VERY EARLY)

Dress circle ticket, $135. (It is remotely possible that there will be 2 tickets available, but I think one of the pair is already sold.)

email me if you'd like the ticket; lhirsch@gmail.com

My last ever Fidelio, because why bother?
To SFS last night, for the last of their semi-staged? concert? performances of Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio. I am afraid that it merely confirmed my past experience of the piece, that while it's got a lot of decent music, ...

Please find a monastery that needs you to interpret canon law, Justice Scalia.
I take this quotation to indicate that Scalia also believes that the 14th Amendment doesn't extend equal rights to women: When the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, every State limited marriage to one man and one wo...

You will not regret seeing this wonderful piece.
I was lucky enough to see Mark Winges's wonderful Pandora's Gift when Volti and company performed it in May at Z Space in San Francisco. It is a gorgeous piece, very dramatic and beautiful, and wonderfully staged by Erika Cho...

A remarkable musician's life and works.
Back in my high school years, I knew I wanted to be a music major, but I didn't have a very good idea of where I should think about going to college. My flute teacher, Beverly Radin, strongly advised me against going to a con...

A financial idea.
We could see more performances of Les Troyens if opera companies would stop performing Faust, Romeo & Juliet, Manon, and Samon & Dalilah* and put the money aside for better operas. Seriously, just stop with that stuff. * Adde...

Troyens: more and more and more.
Back in the fall - this seems a million years ago now - I swapped my Troyens subscription seats from a night assigned to David Karanas for Cassandre to one of the nights when Anna Caterina Antonacci was singing. I now wish I ...

Not publishing a particular comment.
Not publishing that comment. Take it somewhere else. If you want to respond to my specific point about Scalia's dissent - that he wouldn't extend equal protection to women under the 14th amendment because the authors of the a...
