Sorry, I don't buy it... I held a piece of paper against the lines, and they are far more squarish than I ever would have believed, but I did find curvature in the top most line...

+Kirk Jordan I did the same. There is no curvatures. Maybe depends from monitor. My - absolutely flat... ( :

Look at the bottom most line.  There is clearly more tile in the bottom left than there is in the bottom right...yet the top line does not show the same tilt... I say close, but no cigar...

Totally awesome and amazing!

+Kyle Polansky that makes sense... and even with minor discrepancies... this is still a mind boggling illusion.

it's all about your perception of the picture. The pins add the curving of the completely "flat" chess board. Try at home, same thing. :)

If you squint your eyes hard enough, the illusion begins to disappear.

+Nani Pierre You see straight, i have straight on my monitor. Let's play chess!

No, they are not.  If you put this on your screen and hold an envelop or other straight edge up to the screen, you will see that the lines are not, in fact, straight.

That is wild! +Kirk Jordan yes that does the same for me as well.Amazing that just the 'dots' change the whole structure of the image!

^-^ that is cool though i love legos

The left side has 12.5 squares while the right side has 11.75 squares

try printing the thing then see what you get

If you look at the picture from sides with approx 5 degrees, where the illusion stops working, you can also see that lines are straight. Good one, thanks.

There is an obvious skew to the overall image - likely due to being photographed off-center - but this is not what is causing the illusion.  Nice work, whoever created the original!

Awesome - keep them coming

these are placed in such sequence that it looks like this

+Kirk Jordan what you're detecting is distortion caused by the use of a wide-angle lens, which will tend to create curvature around the outside of the image.

One of the white dots (on the edge on the right) should be black.

I blame the camera lens for any curved lines.

Actually, more than one of the white dots should be black. In the row below the one mentioned, there is another one missing.  Looks like someone pulled them off at some point.

Yes! I seen that also...

Look at the four incomplete squares in the corners.  From left to right, the top line slants slightly upwards, and the bottom one slants slightly downwards.  (...or the image itself isn't square...)

nop...d illusion is caused by d placement of d pawns

I'd like 2. Give a shout out 2 my neighbors the Zafro Family the Xelvet family the Homi family and the Vogelwart family

This hurts my head. I know it is straight but my eyes can't believe it!

"d illusion is caused by d placement of d pawns"

C'est la vie!!!

No fuckin way nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope

What d heck izzz dis????!!:-*:-$

Amazing how our brain tries to help us interpret what our eyes are seeing.

Arrrggghhh... My eyes hurt now. Very cool. Paper trick proves it.

it is one of those 3-D puzzles, u can get them from zellers or target, but yes, it is actually supposed to be a soccer ball.....

+Rich LaDuca I wonder if having experienced psychoactive drugs that trigger visual hallucinations increases the effects of this illusion over the general population. Not that this picture seems to be breathing and moving in patterns for me, or anything...

to dispel the illusion, hold up a piece of paper along any one line and you'll see it is straight, the fewer lines that are visible, the less pronounced the illusion should be. Blocking out more than 50% of the image (from above or below the black square in the middle) worked well for me.

If you focus on the dots and not squares you are all good

Actually, they're not. If you hold up a ruler or the border of another window, you can see that the lines are not completely straight.

Now then: The lines are certainly not absolutely straight, parallel and perpendicular. Why? Just zoom in on this picture and form your own opinion! There is nothing straight about it. Not very impressive........

@Coleman Dill - That proves the lines aren't exactly horizontal, but they're still straight.  Load the image in MS Paint and draw a line across it yourself - perfectly straight, but slightly skewed a degree or two from perfectly horizontal/veritical.

theyre straight i put a ruler up to it while zoomed in

Shortsighted people will not get the joke. If you blur your vision, the lines appear straight (not concave). And the trick is the eight small dots around the center square that make it appear bigger (66% bigger). Since in this piucture the brain cannot find a sudden change of size between center and side squares, it tries to make sense of it and make it gradual. If you blur your vision, the size of center and side will look the same and the picture will be straight, although the dots will still add the diagonal line feeling.

It's a photograph.  Distortion to the straightness of the lines is caused by the position of the photographer and the degree to which the lens ads barrel distortion.

Wow! One of the strongest illusions of this kind I've seen! :D

Yes, there may be a tiny bit of actual curvature toward the edges, because of photographic perspective distortion. To eliminate it would require shooting from further away with a tighter zoom, if there was clearance in the room for that. Seems more noticeable at the top edge.

I think you used fisheye lens

I had to dig out a ruler from my drawer to double check it...

cool and interesting how things work on...

Nope, it's an illusion caused by the way the human visual processing system works.  (I did my Master's Thesis on modelling the first 200 ms of mammalian visual processing systems.  There are a surprising number of weird illusions like this.  Discovering them made an otherwise grueling thesis at least a little more fun.)

Check it out yourself... get some type of straight-edge... a ruler, or a folded piece of paper, and lay it along one of the seemingly-bent lines.  They're pretty much straight.  :-)

The picture is a little skewed, probably, as one writer suggested, because the camera was not aligned properly. If you copy and take the skew out in photoshop the illusion still remains, and the lines are perfectly horizontal and vertical.

I see parallel and perpendicular lines... But I have miopie -6D

perhaps your photographer should get a tripod... the horizontal lines are not parallel to the edge of my screen! :P I do know that this kind of illusion is legit, but please don't post trash like this.

Very nice. I had to check if the lines are really straight haha

This is so awesome! How do people come up with this stuff!

Yup, my little measuring devise indicates that "all" lines are not straight / parallel - but close.

Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice ahh agg .. Jeez i just had a bush moment....

Who deserves the credit, and who deserves the blame?

This is what I tell folks about my physical appearance.

Holy crap, that's really convincing...

looks like the middle is depressed or lifted? maybe?

its a lie! its the red wine doing it ;)

blue pill, or red?

More of a distraction than an illusion but fun none the less.

MY EYES!!!! THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING!!!!!

lifted to my eyes

the camera was not perfectly normal to the surface it seems.

that is somewhat impressive, but yeah its not much of a illusion

The lines aren't parallel nor straight. I just confirmed by putting a ruler up to my screen.

+Stephen Yang Actually, they are. I just confirmed by putting a ruler up to my screen. Are you sure you know how to use a ruler?

idk.. it may just be my screen... but when i put the ruler up to it, it wasnt straight.. prob my screen though cuz sooo many people are having stupid fights about straightness and saying "ur ruler must be bent" "do you know how to use a ruler" bleh :P

dammit put the othello board up when you're done

No true. Look at the buttom left white square and buttom right white square. You are telling me all line are straight?!

The black squares make a perfect diagonal line, but then I look at the entire image and suddenly... Warp!
What is this sorcery?
Wan Kay

It's straight all right! Confirmed! Copy the image into paint, draw some straight lines.. it will match up!
Bill C

When I look at it and blink rapidly I can see "straight." Nice!

Brain breaking at first... But try looking at it from the side. Straight as you please. Head spinning o_O

Opens image in new tab to check it's not a gif.
Opens it in GIMP to check lines are straight.
Posts this message to inform others that in fact, they are telling the truth and its just your eyes and brain that are broken.

or just put a piece of paper (straight line) against your computer screen to check

This picture is skewed as indicated by the white tile in the top right having less visible area than the one in the top left. Same effect in the bottom row. There might be some illusion, which I have not tested, which may be caused by the arrangement of the dots.

make a little circle with your fingers and look through it at each individual checker. They all look square when viewed that way.

The best thing about it? Its made with Lego(s)!

The center of the picture is higher than the outside creating the illusion of curved lines. Notice how the center is more in focus than the outside of the picture.

I'd be more impressed if the "anti-racism" panda appeared. "I'm Black, I'm White, I'm Asian"

I saw this illusion/build in person at the Lego Brickfete convention in Toronto a couple of weeks back.

I LIKE THE PICTURE THEY PUT IN THE POST PAPER.

so, anyway--I get out this 12 inch ruler to prove my eyes wrong.  chuckle

its just creepy to think about it.....

thanks, I was wanting a new desktop background

Arrangements of dots only, I believe so

This is Lego. Legos do not bend at that angle without melting or being special pieces. I applaud you.

nice, how do people do this kind of stuff its sick

that really cool grate job

To test, turn your monitor/screen so that you look on at a very shallow angle. Yes indeed, all lines are straight.

This is very well done; even while focusing on the size of each individual tile, the illusion is very strong.

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!

the middle row and column are not parallel.

Funny how History repeats itself (or how memory fades away). This is pale reproduction of Escher's amazing work ;)

I love listening to people try to sound smart..

Remi Bougie, it looks like that because of the elevation. Look at a square on the edge. it is 3x3,  the look at one of the squares in the middle column or row. that is also 3x3. That means your staement is invalid.

Hahaha watch this kids.......ZOOOOOOOOM IN. Everything is just as it says, even and straight.
:-)

went back and revisited the illusion, awesome.... but eyes hurt: )

Ok so you decided to play with your newly installed PS CS6..... zoooooooooomify

If you stand back far enough the x looks perfectly straight. The closer you get it starts to bend. At least for me.

It's simply a trick of angles and placement. There's nothing to get. Its there to look cool.

I AM TRIPPING ON MUSHROOMS M LIQUID ACID "4 DROPS ON 2 SUGER CUES WOW THIS IS AWSOME! I AM ABOUT TO SMOKE A BLUNT WITH EMINEM OH CRAP SORRY MARK I HOPE THAT DOESNT GET LEAKED! SINCERE OUT!

no it's not the light it's the little circles of white and black

I want this for the felt on a pool table. Try to shoot straight....

I hate ppl dat try 2 mess up my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, exactly. If one squints you overcome the optical illusion.
Kris B

Fish eye effect

Nice optical illusion.

If you look at just the lines they are straight. But Its puffed out like santa!

Yeah - I don't buy it either.   When I scroll this to the top of my screen, so I get a flat line to compare to the horizontal 'lines' in this...  you see that some of them just aren't flat.   I call bs.

no, they are not "absolutely straight" - Sheesh - look at the very top and bottom. Note that you can see quite a bit more of the white square in the lower left than the white square in the lower right.
jin SJ

I think the center of the pic might more higher than edge..

I see a big "X" marks the spot. Peace :-)

It's the checkers on the board and not the board it's self!!!!

I love the way two contrasting colors, in two different patterns can make fools of some people, and some can admit to their eyes being fooled. Nice job.

Outside tiles are slightly different than inside ones. This could be part of the illusion.

I think the little circle pieces trick your brain into thinking its a different shape

I don't think so, my brain did not take it all as you say., even though I see a circle kind of stuff..
so i examined further..
1. see the corners : bottom left corner white cube size and bottom right, bottom left is bigger..
likewise the top left box is bigger,
--> so lines are not perpendicular, parallel... just straight..  ur brain is not that stupid :P
2. take a credit card or something similar, and align it to the top left corner,
or
scroll down so that you only see 10% of the image, just last two row & you see what I say.,

either way I appreciate the person's skill to trick us what we see..

that is so crazy! i wish i could think of that kind of stuff but i am sooo not creative like that!

looks like the surface is curved

I discussed this post with 1 person in a hangout.

This is the best illusion I've seen for a while. Thanks!

Clearly many people don't know about photography. The image is real. Any distortion you perceive regarding the lack of straight lines is simply due to the camera processing and REALLY SLOPPY editing that ignored correcting the lens distortion. I have no doubt the original layout is actually legit. It's all about perception and how the brain processes images. This is not a fisheye lens effect, which you can easily confirm because there is absolutely no distortion caused to the "dots". Anway, Escher was the master and I would rather see his work than this amateur stuff.

amazing wow

If you squint real hard, the lines straighten right up. No paper necessary.

what ever! They just used the pins to make the lines looked slanted

although you can tell the lines are straight

All the same...nice. Print it and check it out!

if you look at it and you blink constantly it looks cool
