Obama surprises Biden with highest honor

http://usat.ly/2ippoja

WASHINGTON — President Obama bestowed the nation's highest civilian honor on Vice President Biden Thursday, calling his running mate and presidential understudy "the best vice president America has ever had."The surprise State Room ceremony was alternately humorous and poignant, with Biden turning his face from the audience to wipe away his tears."I had no inkling," Biden said, saying he thought the event was supposed to be for first lady Michelle Obama. He jokingly fired his chief of staff for not telling him. "I don't deserve this, but I know this came from the president's heart."Only two other vice presidents have received the honor. President Gerald Ford awarded it to his vice president, Nelson Rockefeller, in 1977, and President Jimmy Carter awarded it to Lyndon Johnson's vice president, Hubert Humphrey, in 1980.

A tearful vice president caught off guard by award ceremony.

Google teams with 'Hidden Figures' to bust stereotypes

http://usat.ly/2i0KunP

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is hoping the stereotype-busting message in the new film Hidden Figures will encourage more women and people of color to study computer science. The film, which hit theaters Friday, tells the true story of African-American mathematicians Katherine Johnson Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) who overcame racism to play critical roles in NASA's space program in the Jim Crow South of the early 1960s. It's adapted from Margot Lee Shetterly's book by the same title. The women in the film are called computers for calculating the math that launches shuttles and rockets into space.

The tech giant is hosting a coding project and screenings to boost the film's message.

Surgeon general: Addiction must be addressed

http://usat.ly/2g19WHD

A federal report released Thursday calls for a shift in the way America addresses substance addictions, finding one in seven Americans will face such disorders. Only 10% of those addicted receive treatment, the study said."Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health" marks the first report from a U.S. surgeon general dedicated to substance addiction, raising the profile of the widespread epidemic and advocating proven treatment options. An American dies every 19 minutes from opioid or heroin overdose, and Thursday’s report spells out the cost of substance abuse. The economic impact of drug and alcohol misuse and addiction amounts to $442 billion each year — topping diabetes at $245 billion, said Vivek Murthy, the surgeon general.

Popovich goes on fiery rant over Trump election

http://usat.ly/2fkP8Mz

Many NBA coaches, players and commentators have shared their thoughts on President-elect Donald Trump this week. Gregg Popovich provided what I believe is the lengthiest response yet, prior to the Spurs game against the Pistons on Friday night. The crazy thing is that it started with a reporter telling Popovich that many are wondering what his thoughts are on the election and Trump, and the Spurs coach replied, "I don't think my voice is that important."As the reporter told him, no, his voice does matter, Popovich went on to explain what was going through his head - he went on for just under six minutes. Popovich talks about why the entire Trump campaign scares him, and why he's so disgusted that so many Americans voted for Trump.
